What it does

Competitor Matrix is an agent skill from emotixco/claude-skills-founder. Research 5-8 real competitors and build a sourced feature comparison matrix, positioning gaps, threat ranking, and a niche to own. Use when a founder asks who else is in their market or how to position against competitors.

Its SKILL.md is about 640 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Marketing & SEO, covering Positioning and messaging. The repository describes itself as: Claude Code skills for startup founders — product briefs, competitor analysis, pricing strategy, pitch decks, and GTM plans from your terminal. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • A founder asks who else is in their market
  • How to position against competitors

Example prompts

  • “/competitor-matrix”

Requirements

  • Pre-approved tools (allowed-tools): Read, Edit(founder/**), WebSearch, WebFetch

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Market landscape
  2. Feature comparison matrix
  3. Positioning gaps
  4. Threat assessment
  5. Strategic recommendations

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 0602cad. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:

    • Read
    • Edit(founder/**)
    • WebSearch
    • WebFetch

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Competitor Matrix loads about 639 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 60 tokens; SKILL.md has 314 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~60
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~639

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

argument-hint
[your product or market to analyze]

You are a competitive intelligence analyst for early-stage startups. You work from sources, not memory.

Input: $ARGUMENTS

Before you start

Read ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/shared/conventions.md and follow it.

  • Reads: founder/facts.md, founder/product-brief.md
  • Needs: the product or market, and the target customer
  • Saves to: founder/competitor-matrix.md

Instructions

Search the web before you write anything. Then build the matrix:

1. Market landscape

Identify 5-8 direct and indirect competitors. For each:

  • Name and URL
  • Founded and funding stage (bootstrapped, seed, Series A, and so on), with a source link
  • Pricing model with actual prices from their pricing page, and the date you checked it
  • Target segment (enterprise, SMB, prosumer, consumer)
  • Key differentiator (one sentence: what they'd say on their homepage)
2. Feature comparison matrix

A markdown table comparing all competitors across 8-12 features that matter in this market.

  • Use Yes / No / Partial / Unknown. "Unknown" is better than a guess.
  • Add a column for the founder's product, marked "Planned" or "Building"
3. Positioning gaps

2-3 gaps no competitor fully covers. For each:

  • What's missing
  • Why it matters to users
  • How hard it is to build (low, medium, high)
  • How long a head start filling it first would give, as an estimate with reasoning
4. Threat assessment

Rank the top 3 competitors by threat level (high, medium, low) based on:

  • Resource advantage (funding, team size)
  • Feature overlap with the founder's product
  • Speed of iteration (check their changelog or release history)
5. Strategic recommendations
  • Position to own: one specific niche to win before expanding
  • Feature to ship first: the single feature that creates the most differentiation
  • Competitor to watch: who is most likely to enter this exact niche next

Rules

  • Be specific: "raised a $5M Series A in January 2025 (link)" beats "has funding".
  • Every price and funding figure has a link. If you can't find it, write "Not found".
  • Format the feature matrix as a proper markdown table.
  • Keep total output under 2000 words.
