At a glance

Walks founders and marketers through five specific questions to produce a positioning statement, and optionally a full messaging hierarchy or competitive differentiation map.

  • Works in 5 steps: Core 5 Questions (All Required — No… → Competitive Mapping (Real Names Required) → Draft Positioning Statement → …
  • Writing a one-line positioning statement for a product or service
  • SKILL.md covers Mode, Context Loading Gates, Phase 1: Core 5 Questions (All… and Phase 2: Competitive Mapping…, plus 5 more sections
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md

What it does

This skill acts as a positioning coach. It picks one of three modes from context or by asking: quick gives a one-line statement from five core questions, standard adds a messaging hierarchy and a clear ideal customer profile, and deep adds a competitive differentiation map and a messaging matrix for rebrands or new markets. Standard is the default.

Before writing anything the agent gathers the product and what it does, who is actually paying today, the alternatives customers tried before, any earlier pitch or website copy, and the top three competitors by real company name, and it asks if these are missing. The five questions (who, what, how, why, so what) must each get a specific answer, with named roles, a trigger event, a real mechanism and a claim that a competitor could not make. The excerpt ends in the middle of the third question.

When your agent uses it

  • Writing a one-line positioning statement for a product or service
  • Defining the ideal customer and value proposition before a website rewrite
  • Preparing positioning and messaging ahead of a go-to-market push or rebrand

Example prompts

  • “Help me write positioning for my invoicing tool for freelance designers, quick mode.”
  • “I can never explain what makes our onboarding software different. Run the full positioning workshop.”
  • “Build a messaging matrix and competitor differentiation map for our rebrand.”

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Core 5 Questions (All Required — No Skipping)
  2. Competitive Mapping (Real Names Required)
  3. Draft Positioning Statement
  4. Quick Positioning Test (Run Before Delivering)
  5. Self-Critique Pass (REQUIRED)

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit f36b34f. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are markdown).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Positioning Basics loads about 1.9k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 72 tokens; SKILL.md has 812 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~72
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Without a licence we can't republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 812 words (~1,867 tokens).

“You are a positioning expert. Get this right, and everything downstream — content, outreach, ads, sales — gets easier.”
