At a glance

Starts, lists, monitors, waits on and stops long-running background commands through a dedicated set of job-management tools.

  • Works in 5 steps: Use background true (not bare… → Always provide a description. → Foreground is default — the result and… → …
  • Running a long shell command without blocking the current turn
  • SKILL.md covers Tools, Parameters, Response Fields and Errors, plus 2 more sections
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md

What it does

Provides six tools: `yao_job_start` either blocks until a command finishes and returns its output, or with `background` set returns a job id immediately; `yao_job_list` filters by status with pagination; `yao_job_get` returns full details for a job or daemon; `yao_job_output` reads process output from a given byte offset; `yao_job_wait` blocks until a background job finishes or a timeout passes; and `yao_job_stop` kills a running job.

Output is read through a ring buffer capped at 10 MB, so a process that has produced more output than that marks the response `lossy=true` and reports the earliest byte position still available rather than the full history. Every response is JSON and job records carry fields such as pid, exit code, signal and timestamps.

When your agent uses it

  • Running a long shell command without blocking the current turn
  • Checking whether a background job has finished and what it printed
  • Waiting for a background job to complete before continuing
  • Stopping a long-running command that is no longer needed

Example prompts

  • “Start the test suite in the background and tell me when it's done.”
  • “List all running jobs and show me their status.”
  • “Stop the build job I started five minutes ago.”

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Use background true (not bare --background) for commands expected to run longer than 30 seconds.
  2. Always provide a description.
  3. Foreground is default — the result and output come back in one call.
  4. Monitor background output with yao_job_output to check progress.
  5. Use yao_job_wait to block until a background job completes rather than polling.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit eea1e7e. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are json).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Yao Background Job Manager loads about 1k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 56 tokens; SKILL.md has 383 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~56
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 383 words (~1,039 tokens).
