At a glance

Starts, lists, checks, restarts and stops long-running background services through Yao daemon tools, reporting the verified port and URL of each.

  • Works in 5 steps: Always provide a description. → Specify port when starting a server —… → Daemons run indefinitely — use… → …
  • Starting a dev server so it keeps running in the background
  • SKILL.md covers Tools, Parameters, Response Fields and Errors, plus 2 more sections
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md

What it does

The skill lists six tools: yao_daemon_start, yao_daemon_list, yao_daemon_status, yao_daemon_stop, yao_daemon_restart and yao_job_output. Starting a service always runs it in the background and returns a daemon ID right away; you give it the shell command and a short description, and may add a port, extra arguments and a working directory.

Each daemon record carries its status, process IDs, timestamps, exit code and, once the system sees the process listening, a daemon_port and daemon_url. If the port is not confirmed within a short settle window, the start call returns a port_detecting state instead. Restarting keeps the same ID and bumps a restart counter, listing can be filtered by status and paged, and daemon output is read with yao_job_output using the daemon ID.

When your agent uses it

  • Starting a dev server so it keeps running in the background
  • Checking whether a background service is up and on which port
  • Restarting a stuck daemon without losing its ID
  • Stopping long-running processes you no longer need

Example prompts

  • “Start the dev server with npm run dev in the web folder and tell me its URL.”
  • “List all running daemons and show me the output of the failed one.”
  • “Restart the API daemon and confirm the port is listening again.”

Requirements

  • Yao daemon tools such as yao_daemon_start available to the agent

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Always provide a description.
  2. Specify port when starting a server — the system confirms the port is actually listening before reporting daemon_url.
  3. Daemons run indefinitely — use yao_daemon_stop to terminate.
  4. Use yao_daemon_restart to restart a crashed or misconfigured daemon without losing its ID.
  5. Monitor output with yao_job_output passing the daemon_id as job_id.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 0b6ee5f. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are json).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Yao Daemon Manager loads about 1.1k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 56 tokens; SKILL.md has 436 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~56
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.1k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 436 words (~1,125 tokens).
