At a glance

Fetches Reddit posts, threads and search results as JSON through a browser session, using a DuckDuckGo redirect to get past Reddit's automated-access block.

  • Works in 3 steps: mcpplaywrightbrowser_navigate to… → Grab the first result's full href - it's… → browser_navigate to that full redirect…
  • Reading a Reddit thread when plain requests return 403
  • SKILL.md covers Primary method: the…, JSON shapes (same for browser…, Fallbacks and Rate limiting
  • Calls curl, jq and kind; reaches html.duckduckgo.com and duckduckgo.com

What it does

Reddit serves JSON when `.json` is appended to a URL, but the skill notes that plain `curl` is refused with a 403 almost every time and a cold browser visit hits a block page. Its workaround is a one-time hop per session: use Playwright to search DuckDuckGo for the subreddit, open the first result's full redirect link with its token, and land on a real Reddit page, which sets a session cookie.

After that the agent navigates Playwright straight to `.json` URLs, such as a subreddit search with sort and time-range options or a thread's comments sorted by top, and parses the page text. Evaluation is wrapped in try/catch so an expired session shows up as a block page and the hop can be repeated. A stale Playwright instance holding the browser profile is cleared with `pkill` before retrying.

When your agent uses it

  • Reading a Reddit thread when plain requests return 403
  • Searching a subreddit for recent posts on a topic
  • Collecting top comments from a Reddit post for research

Example prompts

  • “Search r/selfhosted for posts from the past week about backup tools and summarize them.”
  • “Open this Reddit thread and give me the top comments.”
  • “Reddit blocked curl for me. Get the JSON for this subreddit's newest posts another way.”

Requirements

  • Playwright browser tools available to the agent
  • Network access to Reddit and DuckDuckGo

Workflow steps

3 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. mcpplaywrightbrowser_navigate to https://html.duckduckgo.com/html/?q=site:reddit.com/r/SUBREDDIT+YOUR+QUERY
  2. Grab the first result's full href - it's a DDG redirect that includes a rut token (https://duckduckgo.com/l/?uddg=...&rut=...). The token…
  3. browser_navigate to that full redirect href. It lands on a real www.reddit.com page (title = the post/subreddit title, not "Blocked") and…

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 577ac89. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • curl
    • jq
    • kind

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:

    • html.duckduckgo.com
    • duckduckgo.com
    • reddit.com
    • old.reddit.com

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Reddit JSON Fetcher loads about 1.4k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 52 tokens; SKILL.md has 524 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~52
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.4k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 524 words (~1,369 tokens).

“Reddit's public JSON API works by appending .json to any Reddit URL — but Reddit now hard-blocks automated access. curl 403s essentially every time (host AND container, regardless of User-Agent), and even a cold Playwright navigation to reddit.com hits a…”
