hn-summarizeFetches Hacker News top stories, a chosen story with its comment thread and the linked article through the official APIs, then summarizes them.
The hckrnews.com front end is rendered with JavaScript, so fetching it returns an empty shell and the skill says not to scrape it. It uses the official Hacker News Firebase and Algolia APIs instead, which return plain JSON with points, comment counts and full comment trees. The current top stories come from `topstories.json`, which lists 500 story IDs in front-page order, and the agent takes the first N and looks up each item.
To find a specific story, the agent searches Algolia by topic, optionally filtering by a recent timestamp to avoid old duplicates, and picks the match with the most points and comments. It then fetches the item's nested comment tree and prints root comments in thread order, since per-comment points are now always null. The linked article is fetched with `curl`, stripped to readable text, and a Wayback Machine snapshot is the fallback for JavaScript-heavy or paywalled pages.
4 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 577ac89. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:
hacker-news.firebaseio.comhn.algolia.comarchive.orgFrom URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Hacker News Summarizer loads about 942 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 58 tokens; SKILL.md has 306 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 306 words (~942 tokens).
“hckrnews.com is a JavaScript-rendered front end - curling it returns an empty shell, so do not scrape it. Instead use the official Hacker News APIs (Firebase + Algolia), which give the same stories with points, comment counts, and full comment…”

Run `npx skills add ykdojo/claude-code-tips --skill hn-summarize -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/hn-summarize in ykdojo/claude-code-tips) into .claude/skills/hn-summarize in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add ykdojo/claude-code-tips --skill hn-summarize -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/hn-summarize in ykdojo/claude-code-tips) into .agents/skills/hn-summarize in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add ykdojo/claude-code-tips --skill hn-summarize -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/hn-summarize, .gemini/skills/hn-summarize, .github/skills/hn-summarize and .opencode/skills/hn-summarize in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Hacker News Summarizer needs the command-line tools its instructions call (curl and python3). Our summary lists: Network access to the Hacker News and Algolia APIs; `curl` and Python 3.
SKILL.md names 3 domains. In commands or code: hacker-news.firebaseio.com, hn.algolia.com and archive.org; the agent is likely to contact these when it follows the instructions. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Hacker News Summarizer has a licence file (the repository's licence) that doesn't match a standard licence. Read it on GitHub before reusing the skill.
About 942 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 3.8k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
