version-checkRecommends whether to stay on the installed Claude Code version, update, or pin another one by comparing npm tags, release timing and the changelog.
Claude Code ships new builds very often, so the aim is a recommended range instead of one best version. The heuristics: the npm `stable` tag is not a long-term-support line and can trail an important fix, a quiet release is a good sign, posts comparing builds reveal which one to avoid, staying about a day behind the newest release is sensible, and a same-day build is acceptable when the tracker is quiet and it fixes something you are hitting.
The steps begin with `claude --version` and `npm view` for the published dist-tags and release times, then scan the changelog between the installed version and the latest for regressions that have not been fixed. The agent states plainly what is being traded when you take a newer build early, so you can decide with the risk in view.
5 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 577ac89. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
claudenpmpython3curlghFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:
raw.githubusercontent.comreddit.comFrom URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Claude Code Version Check loads about 1.8k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 59 tokens; SKILL.md has 911 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 911 words (~1,837 tokens).
“The goal is a recommendation: stay put, update, or pin to a specific version. Claude Code ships latest very frequently (often 1-2x/day), so "best version" is a moving target and the answer is usually a range, not a single build.”

Dependency upgrades: outdated/vulnerable deps planned into semver waves (patch/minor batched, majors gated and changelog-read), applied incrementally with lockfiles regenerated and tests green after…

Claude Code Version Check fits situations like: deciding whether to update Claude Code today or wait; checking whether a recent release has known regressions; seeing what changed between the installed version and the latest.
Run `npx skills add ykdojo/claude-code-tips --skill version-check -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/version-check in ykdojo/claude-code-tips) into .claude/skills/version-check in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add ykdojo/claude-code-tips --skill version-check -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/version-check, .gemini/skills/version-check, .github/skills/version-check and .opencode/skills/version-check in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Claude Code Version Check needs the command-line tools its instructions call (claude, npm, python3, curl and gh). Our summary lists: npm and network access to the npm registry and the Claude Code changelog.
SKILL.md names 2 domains. In commands or code: raw.githubusercontent.com and reddit.com; the agent is likely to contact these when it follows the instructions. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Claude Code Version Check has a licence file (the repository's licence) that doesn't match a standard licence. Read it on GitHub before reusing the skill.
About 1.8k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 7.3k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
