At a glance

Full-text searches across every one of the user's GitHub repos, including private ones, using a local mirror and ripgrep instead of GitHub's own search.

  • Finding which private repo contains a specific piece of code
  • SKILL.md covers Searching, First-time setup and Caveats
  • Runs Shell scripts from its folder; calls rg, bash and gh
  • Searching across all of a user's repos, including private ones

What it does

This skill works around a real gap: GitHub's modern code search that indexes private repos is web-only, and the gh CLI's legacy search command often returns nothing for private repos. Instead it searches a local mirror of every one of the user's repos - covering the same default-branch, non-fork content as GitHub's own index - where a full search takes milliseconds once the mirror exists.

Before searching it always refreshes the mirror first, which exits instantly if it was already synced within the last hour and takes about 15 seconds otherwise, then runs ripgrep against the mirrored repos to list matching files or matching lines. On first use, if the mirror's owners list doesn't exist yet, it asks the user which GitHub accounts to mirror rather than guessing, since they may manage several, writes them one per line, and kicks off the initial clone in the background, which needs gh authenticated with access to those accounts.

Only the default branch's current tip is mirrored, so searching commit history or other branches still needs a full clone or GitHub's own web search, and the skill warns that the mirror can contain private data that must stay out of synced folders and never be committed or published.

When your agent uses it

  • Finding which private repo contains a specific piece of code
  • Searching across all of a user's repos, including private ones
  • Setting up a local mirror for fast full-text repo search

Example prompts

  • “Where did I put the retry logic for the payment webhook?”
  • “Which of my repos has the Dockerfile with the multi-stage build?”
  • “Search all my private repos for this exact error string.”

Requirements

  • gh CLI authenticated with access to the mirrored accounts
  • ripgrep

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 577ac89. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships script files (Shell), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • rg
    • bash
    • gh
    • git

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use gh and git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Private GitHub Repo Search loads about 444 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 74 tokens; SKILL.md has 185 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~74
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~444

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 185 words (~444 tokens).
