What it does

Visual Regression Lab is an agent skill from TheGoat395/Codex-Skills. Compare captures; stitch lazy/animated pages.

Its SKILL.md is about 520 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 8 other files, including scripts and reference files (for example `agents/openai.yaml`, `references/baseline-contract.md` and `references/stitched-full-page-capture.md`).

It sits in Testing & QA, covering Visual regression testing. The repository describes itself as: Codex-first Agent Skills library for premium frontend, website, motion, accessibility, QA, and handoff workflows. The licence is MIT.

Workflow steps

9 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Start or identify the local server.
  2. Open the relevant route in a browser or Playwright.
  3. Capture the relevant supported viewports and states, using the same conditions for baseline and candidate.
  4. Check console errors, failed requests, layout overflow, missing media, and text clipping.
  5. Inspect first viewport composition, hierarchy, spacing, typography, image crops, and CTA visibility.
  6. Test key interactions: nav, forms, menus, tabs, accordions, hover states, focus states, and modals.
  7. For animation-heavy work, test reduced-motion behavior and watch for jank.
  8. For canvas/WebGL/video, verify nonblank rendered pixels and stable framing.
  9. Report observed differences with evidence. Repair only when authorized, then recapture affected states; no fixed polish-pass or edit quota…

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit feff772. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 2 files in scripts/ (JavaScript), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • node

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Visual Regression Lab loads about 516 tokens when it runs, and up to ~1.7k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 17 tokens; SKILL.md has 244 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~17
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~516
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~1.7k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

Compare captures; stitch lazy/animated pages.

Visual Regression Lab

Use this skill to capture comparable browser evidence and inspect visual regressions. Scope routes, viewports and states to the requested comparison; a capture alone does not prove quality.

Required Checks

Repair only when authorized, then recapture affected states; no fixed polish-pass or edit quota applies.

Read baseline contract. When a project has Playwright installed, run node "<skill-root>/scripts/capture-settled-baseline.mjs" <url> <output-dir> to capture settled desktop/mobile/reduced-motion states and a machine-readable inspection manifest.

When native full-page capture is blank, sparse, incomplete, or inconsistent with real scrolling, read stitched full-page capture and run node "<skill-root>/scripts/capture-stitched-full-page.mjs" --url <url> --output <image>. Treat the stitched image as evidence only after visual inspection.

Output

Report:

  • routes/viewports checked
  • screenshots or saved paths when available
  • issues found and fixed
  • commands run
  • anything not tested

Resolve <skill-root> to this skill folder's actual absolute location; preserve project-local module resolution for Node capture tools.

Can I use Visual Regression Lab in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add TheGoat395/Codex-Skills --skill visual-regression-lab -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/visual-regression-lab, .gemini/skills/visual-regression-lab, .github/skills/visual-regression-lab and .opencode/skills/visual-regression-lab in your project.

What does Visual Regression Lab need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Visual Regression Lab needs JavaScript for the scripts in its folder and the command-line tools its instructions call (node). Our summary lists: Node.js.

Does Visual Regression Lab access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Visual Regression Lab safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.

What licence does Visual Regression Lab use?

Visual Regression Lab is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Visual Regression Lab use?

About 516 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 2.1k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 1.2k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.

What are the alternatives to Visual Regression Lab?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Visual Regression Lab: Review Local UI Screenshots (xiaocang/easydict_win32, 104 stars), Handsontable Visual Test Demos (handsontable/handsontable, 22k stars), Kc Screenshot (imran31415/kube-coder, 388 stars) and Visual QA (liangdabiao/Godogen, 126 stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.
