What it does

Web Reference Research is an agent skill from TheGoat395/Codex-Skills. Analyze selected sources: Viktor or MotionSites.

Its SKILL.md is about 480 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 8 other files, including scripts and reference files (for example `agents/openai.yaml`, `references/evidence-record-schema.md` and `references/reconstruction-manifest.md`).

It sits in Frontend & Design. The repository describes itself as: Codex-first Agent Skills library for premium frontend, website, motion, accessibility, QA, and handoff workflows. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Frontend & Design work in your project

Example prompts

  • “/web-reference-research”

Requirements

  • Python 3

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit feff772. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 1 file in scripts/ (Python), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • python3

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Web Reference Research loads about 475 tokens when it runs, and up to ~2.4k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 18 tokens; SKILL.md has 185 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~18
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~475
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~2.4k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

Web Reference Research

Purpose

Convert taste references into concrete, verifiable design decisions.

Scoped execution

Apply the shared web contract once when execution crosses phases; reuse it if already read. Load only the specialist guidance relevant to the requested surface and deliverable.

Detailed Guide

Read web reference research guide for the selected workflow. Apply only the requested surface; review-only work reports findings, while authorized changes continue through implementation and relevant verification.

For item-level motion references, also read references/reconstruction-manifest.md and validate the research record with python3 "<skill-root>/scripts/verify-reference-record.py" <record.json>.

Scope and evidence

Resolve source fidelity mode before extraction. Exact authorized/supplied-source work preserves requested details; original work needs an originality delta. Motion-specific phase extraction belongs to $reference-motion-reconstruction. Empty unavailable-evidence is legitimate when nothing is missing.

For helper-driven evidence, use the typed record schema. The helper validates structure only; use actual inspection/test results for claims.

Resolve <skill-root> to this skill folder's actual absolute location; preserve project-local module resolution for Node capture tools.

Optional specialists

reference-motion-reconstruction is optional. Without it, use the bundled reconstruction-manifest guide to record observed phases, trigger, timing, responsive/reduced-motion behavior and missing evidence; do not invent unseen motion.

Can I use Web Reference Research in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add TheGoat395/Codex-Skills --skill web-reference-research -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/web-reference-research, .gemini/skills/web-reference-research, .github/skills/web-reference-research and .opencode/skills/web-reference-research in your project.

What does Web Reference Research need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Web Reference Research needs Python for the scripts in its folder and the command-line tools its instructions call (python3). Our summary lists: Python 3.

Does Web Reference Research access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Web Reference Research safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.

What licence does Web Reference Research use?
