Guide to Handsontable's performance-tests package: Playwright scenarios measured through CDP traces and compared against golden baselines taken from the develop branch.

  • Works in 3 steps: scenario.config.mjs → fixture.html → Spec
  • Adding a new performance scenario for a Handsontable feature
  • SKILL.md covers Package structure, Adding a scenario, Existing scenarios and Run commands, plus 5 more sections
  • Calls node, npx and npm

What it does

The performance-tests package measures rendering and interaction speed with Playwright and CDP traces. It is a standalone package outside the pnpm workspace, with its own package.json, node_modules and ESLint config. Each scenario traces one interaction, parses the trace into DevTools categories (scripting, rendering, painting and idle), and produces a markdown PR comment and an HTML report compared with a golden baseline from develop.

Adding a scenario means three files in the scenarios folder: a config module whose name equals the folder, a standalone fixture page that exposes the grid as window.__hot with automatic row and column sizing turned off, and a Playwright spec. The config's measurementVersion is bumped when the measured window or iteration count changes, because baselines only draw on goldens of the same version, while HARNESS_VERSION covers runner-wide changes. Playwright runs sequentially with one worker, a 5 minute timeout and Chromium only, and golden snapshots are fetched from GitHub Pages.

When your agent uses it

  • Adding a new performance scenario for a Handsontable feature
  • Debugging a performance test or its trace parsing
  • Benchmarking filtering or sorting with hook timing
  • Understanding the golden snapshot and CI comparison pipeline

Example prompts

  • “Add a performance scenario that measures scrolling a large grid and explain the grid size in the config.”
  • “Why did the median baseline restart after my change to the iteration count?”
  • “Benchmark the column sorting feature with hook timing.”

Requirements

  • A checkout of the Handsontable repository
  • Playwright with Chromium

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit fff66b1. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • node
    • npx
    • npm

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use npx and npm, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Handsontable Performance Testing loads about 3.4k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 125 tokens; SKILL.md has 1,325 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~125
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~3.4k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 1,325 words (~3,434 tokens).
