At a glance

Queries a pre-built, Tree-sitter-based code graph of the whole monorepo instead of grepping call chains, for exploring, debugging, refactoring or reviewing code.

  • Works in 4 steps: list_graph_stats, then list_communities… → semantic_search_nodes finds a function… → query_graph with callers_of / callees_of… → …
  • Tracing every caller of a function before changing its signature
  • SKILL.md covers Bootstrap once per session, Keep the graph current, Modes and Cross-cutting rules
  • Calls pipx and git

What it does

This skill replaces walking call chains with grep and read by querying a pre-built code-review-graph over the whole monorepo through MCP tools, which it describes as 2-6x cheaper and able to catch dynamic dispatch that grep misses. It shares one setup and tool set across four modes - explore, debug, refactor and review - and loads the graph's MCP tool schemas with one ToolSearch call before first use, since the tools are deferred.

It keeps the graph synced automatically after edits through a PostToolUse hook, but requires a manual rebuild after a branch switch, pull, or large merge, since a graph built on another branch reports function names from unrelated files. In explore mode it moves from community and symbol search to callers_of, callees_of and importers_of queries and execution-path flows; in debug mode it searches for code near a symptom, traces callers and callees, and checks recent changes as the most common cause; in refactor mode it checks impact radius before touching code and previews a rename or dead-code removal before applying it; and in review mode it scores changes by risk and checks test coverage.

It flags that the refactor tool, apply-refactor tool, and a large-function finder are not validated on this particular codebase, so their output should be treated as a hypothesis to verify against the actual code rather than applied blindly.

When your agent uses it

  • Tracing every caller of a function before changing its signature
  • Finding the root cause of a bug across several files
  • Checking the blast radius of a rename before applying it

Example prompts

  • “Who calls this function, and would renaming it break anything?”
  • “Trace why this error happens across the affected modules.”
  • “Review this PR's diff and flag any untested changes.”

Requirements

  • The code-review-graph MCP server and a built graph

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. list_graph_stats, then list_communities and get_community.
  2. semantic_search_nodes finds a function or class by name (keyword match).
  3. query_graph with callers_of / callees_of / importers_of / children_of.
  4. list_flows and get_flow for execution paths.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 68b5e97. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • pipx
    • git

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use pipx and git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Code Review Graph Navigator loads about 939 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 198 tokens; SKILL.md has 313 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~198
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~939

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 313 words (~939 tokens).

“Four modes (explore, debug, refactor, review) share the same setup and tools. Full setup, version pin, rebuild, troubleshooting: .ai/MCP.md ("code-review-graph MCP").”
