At a glance

Drafts a Crossing the Chasm-style positioning statement that forces hard choices about target customer, category, and differentiation.

  • Works in 5 steps: Gather Context → Draft the Value Proposition → Draft the Differentiation Statement → …
  • Aligning stakeholders on product strategy before a launch
  • SKILL.md covers Purpose, Input, Key Concepts and Application, plus 3 more sections
  • Reaches github.com

What it does

Moore's framework splits the output into two linked parts: a value proposition naming the target customer, the underserved need, the product category, and the benefit, and a differentiation statement naming the nearest alternative and what sets the product apart from it. Vague fills such as 'for everyone' or 'unlike all competitors' are explicitly disallowed, since the exercise is meant to expose whether a defensible difference actually exists rather than produce a tagline.

When your agent uses it

  • Aligning stakeholders on product strategy before a launch
  • Testing whether a value proposition is crisp or just generic
  • Writing messaging that needs a clear category and differentiator

Example prompts

  • “Positioning statement for LaunchDarkly-style feature flags aimed at platform leads at 200+ eng orgs.”
  • “Is our current pitch generic, or does it have real differentiation?”
  • “Draft a positioning statement for our new API monitoring product.”

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Gather Context
  2. Draft the Value Proposition
  3. Draft the Differentiation Statement
  4. Stress-Test the Positioning
  5. Socialize and Iterate

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 1b5a524. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are markdown).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:

    • github.com

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Geoffrey Moore Positioning Statement loads about 2.6k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 48 tokens; SKILL.md has 1,098 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~48
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~2.6k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
