What it does
Six categories of outward-facing, macro-environmental forces are worked through in turn, tracing back to Francis Joseph Aguilar's 1967 PEST analysis before Legal and Environmental were added: government policy and trade rules, growth and spending trends, demographic and cultural shifts, technological and R&D advances, climate and resource pressures, and compliance obligations. The analysis asks for the product, market, or decision it should serve plus a geography and time horizon before scanning the six forces, since an unanchored PESTEL has nothing to check itself against.
