context-engineering-advisorDiagnoses whether an AI workflow suffers from context stuffing or uses context engineering, and suggests structural fixes such as bounded domains and episodic retrieval.
Written for product managers, the skill contrasts context stuffing, which assumes more volume means better output, as in pasting the entire PRD, with context engineering, which treats AI attention as a scarce resource and allocates it deliberately. It treats the problem as information architecture rather than prompt writing, and notes that a model's parametric knowledge is static and cannot be attributed, so grounding in current data is what closes the gap.
You describe the workflow, agent or prompt setup that feels bloated, brittle or hard to steer, plus what you have stuffed into context and where outputs go wrong. The advisor identifies context boundaries, addresses what it calls Context Hoarding Disorder, and recommends practices such as bounded context per agent, retrieval with intent instead of persisting everything, fixing structure instead of retrying, and the Research, Plan, Reset, Implement cycle.

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 1b5a524. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are markdown).

Context Engineering Advisor loads about 8.1k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 38 tokens; SKILL.md has 3,854 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 3,854 words (~8,088 tokens).
“Guide product managers through diagnosing whether they're doing context stuffing (jamming volume without intent) or context engineering (shaping structure for attention). Use this to identify context boundaries, fix "Context Hoarding Disorder," and implement tactical practices like bounded domains, episodic retrieval…”

Context Engineering Advisor fits situations like: an AI workflow has grown bloated, brittle or hard to steer reliably; deciding what belongs in an agent's context and what should be retrieved on demand; splitting a long agent chain into bounded contexts per agent.
Run `npx skills add deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills --skill context-engineering-advisor -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/context-engineering-advisor in deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills) into .claude/skills/context-engineering-advisor in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills --skill context-engineering-advisor -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/context-engineering-advisor in deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills) into .agents/skills/context-engineering-advisor in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills --skill context-engineering-advisor -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/context-engineering-advisor, .gemini/skills/context-engineering-advisor, .github/skills/context-engineering-advisor and .opencode/skills/context-engineering-advisor in your project.
SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Context Engineering Advisor is instructions for the agent only.
SKILL.md names 2 domains. As links in the text: deanpeters.substack.com and anthropic.com. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Context Engineering Advisor has a licence file (the repository's licence) that doesn't match a standard licence. Read it on GitHub before reusing the skill.
About 8.1k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 32k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
