At a glance

Audits a codebase for technical debt across nine dimensions and writes TECH_DEBT_AUDIT.md with file-cited findings, severity, effort estimates and priorities.

  • Works in 4 steps: Orient → Audit Across 9 Dimensions → Deeper Dives (Parallel Sub-Agents) → …
  • Getting a codebase health check before a refactoring or cleanup sprint
  • SKILL.md covers Output, Phase 0: Orient, Phase 1: Audit Across 9… and Phase 2: Deeper Dives…, plus 3 more sections
  • Needs API_KEY

What it does

The agent first orients itself: it maps the language stack from file globs, reads package.json for dependencies and build tooling, checks recent git history for the most-changed files and finds the largest files, treating files that are both high-churn and large as hot zones. It then audits nine dimensions using grep, language-server diagnostics and ast-grep patterns, and every finding has to cite file, line and column.

The excerpt lists thresholds for flagging problems, such as files over 500 lines, functions over 80 lines or more than four levels of nesting, classes with over 15 methods, import cycles, dead exports and long blocks of commented-out code. The TECH_DEBT_AUDIT.md result holds an executive summary, a short architecture model, a findings table with severity and effort in hours, the top five priorities, a checklist of quick wins under 30 minutes, a section for patterns that look bad but are intentional, and open questions for the maintainer.

When your agent uses it

  • Getting a codebase health check before a refactoring or cleanup sprint
  • Finding god files, import cycles and dead exports in a project
  • Producing a prioritized, file-cited debt list to hand to maintainers

Example prompts

  • “Do a tech debt audit on this repo and write the report to TECH_DEBT_AUDIT.md.”
  • “Find the worst technical debt in this codebase and cite file and line for each item.”
  • “Give me quick wins under 30 minutes from a code health check of the services folder.”

Requirements

  • ast-grep (the sg command)
  • Git history for churn analysis
  • The OMO tool set: grep, glob, bash and lsp_diagnostics

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Orient
  2. Audit Across 9 Dimensions
  3. Deeper Dives (Parallel Sub-Agents)
  4. Synthesize & Deliver

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit cbd7dd2. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:

    • API_KEY

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Tech Debt Audit loads about 2.4k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 133 tokens; SKILL.md has 919 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~133
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~2.4k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check: notes

The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.

  • NoteMentions a .env fileSKILL.md:101
    - `grep(".env|process.env|Bun.env")` — env var usage

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 919 words (~2,378 tokens).

“Model-agnostic technical debt audit for oh-my-openagent (OMO). Uses OMO's built-in tools (grep, glob, bash with sg, read, lsp_diagnostics, task). Produces a grounded, citable TECH_DEBT_AUDIT.md artifact.”
