searchSearch your Claude Code session history through the claude-view MCP server, matching summaries, commit messages and project or branch names, and present the most relevant sessions.
The skill finds past Claude Code sessions for requests about where something was discussed or when a piece of work happened. It calls the search_sessions tool with the user's query, falls back to list_sessions with a query filter and a result limit when the first results are sparse, and fetches full details with get_session for the top few matches, including commits and the summary.
Results are presented as a formatted list with a count of sessions found. When nothing matches, the agent suggests other search terms or broader filters and notes that search covers session summaries, commit messages, and project and branch names. The claude-view server must be running on localhost; a plugin hook starts it, and if it is not detected the agent tells you to start it with npx claude-view. Allowed tools are limited to the three session tools.
5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit ff3cdd1. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:
mcp__claude-view__search_sessionsmcp__claude-view__list_sessionsmcp__claude-view__get_sessionFrom allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
npxFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use npx, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Claude Session Search loads about 3k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 39 tokens; SKILL.md has 1,037 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from tombelieber/claude-view at commit ff3cdd1, republished under its MIT licence (© tombelieber). 1,037 words, ~2,980 tokens.
.claude/skills/search/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder). This skill also uses 1 other file; get the full folder from GitHub.You have access to the claude-view MCP server which provides tools for monitoring, analyzing, and managing Claude Code sessions. The claude-view server must be running on localhost (it auto-starts via the plugin hook).
Important: All tool names are prefixed with mcp__claude-view__. When calling a tool, always use the full prefixed name.
Error handling: If a tool returns an error about the server not being detected, tell the user to start it with npx claude-view.
Find sessions across the user's Claude Code history using grep-backed session search.
Search sessions. Call mcp__claude-view__search_sessions with the user's query as the q parameter.
If results are sparse, try mcp__claude-view__list_sessions with the q filter parameter and limit: 20 to catch sessions matched by metadata (project name, branch, model).
For the most relevant results (top 3-5), call mcp__claude-view__get_session to get full details including commits and summary.

Search your Claude Code session history through the claude-view MCP server, matching summaries, commit messages and project or branch names, and present the most relevant sessions.
Claude Session Search fits situations like: finding where you discussed a topic in earlier Claude Code sessions; working out when you last worked on a feature or bug; locating the session behind a specific commit or branch; searching history by project name when you only remember the repo.
Run `npx skills add tombelieber/claude-view --skill search -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (packages/plugin/skills/search in tombelieber/claude-view) into .claude/skills/search in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add tombelieber/claude-view --skill search -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (packages/plugin/skills/search in tombelieber/claude-view) into .agents/skills/search in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add tombelieber/claude-view --skill search -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/search, .gemini/skills/search, .github/skills/search and .opencode/skills/search in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Claude Session Search needs the command-line tools its instructions call (npx). Our summary lists: The claude-view server running on localhost (npx claude-view); The claude-view MCP server connected. Its frontmatter pre-approves these tools: mcp__claude-view__search_sessions, mcp__claude-view__list_sessions, mcp__claude-view__get_session.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Its commands use npx, which can reach the network depending on how they are called. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Claude Session Search is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 3k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 12k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
