  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md

What it does

Windows Services is an agent skill from taracodlabs/aiden. Windows services: list, start, stop, restart, configure (PowerShell)

Its SKILL.md is about 780 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 1 other file (for example `skill.json`).

It works with PowerShell. The repository describes itself as: Aiden — an autonomous AI agent and work engine built solo. It can operate your browser, terminal, files, apps, APIs, skills and tools, remember context, recover from failures… The licence is Apache-2.0.

Example prompts

  • “Use the windows-services skill to window services: list, start, stop, restart, configure (PowerShell)”
  • “/windows-services”

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 3704204. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are powershell).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Windows Services loads about 776 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 21 tokens; SKILL.md has 209 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~21
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~776

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Windows Services

Manage Windows background services — list, start, stop, restart, and change startup type — using PowerShell's built-in service cmdlets.

When to Use

  • User wants to list running or stopped Windows services
  • User asks to start, stop, or restart a specific service
  • User wants to change a service's startup type (automatic, manual, disabled)
  • User needs to find which service owns a process or port
  • User wants to check if a service is healthy or crashing

How to Use

List all running services
powershell
Get-Service | Where-Object Status -eq 'Running' |
  Select-Object Name, DisplayName, Status |
  Sort-Object DisplayName
Find a specific service
powershell
Get-Service -Name "*sql*" | Select-Object Name, DisplayName, Status, StartType
Start, stop, or restart a service
powershell
Start-Service -Name "wuauserv" # Windows Update — start
Stop-Service -Name "wuauserv" -Force # Windows Update — stop
Restart-Service -Name "Spooler" # Print Spooler — restart
Check service startup type
powershell
Get-Service -Name "wuauserv" | Select-Object Name, StartType, Status
Change startup type (Manual / Disabled / Automatic)
powershell
Set-Service -Name "wuauserv" -StartupType Manual # won't start automatically
Set-Service -Name "DiagTrack" -StartupType Disabled # blocked from starting
Set-Service -Name "Spooler" -StartupType Automatic # restores auto-start
List services that failed to start
powershell
Get-Service | Where-Object { $_.StartType -eq 'Automatic' -and $_.Status -ne 'Running' } |
  Select-Object Name, DisplayName, Status
Find service by process ID
powershell
$pid = 1234
Get-WmiObject Win32_Service | Where-Object ProcessId -eq $pid |
  Select-Object Name, DisplayName, State, ProcessId
View service dependencies
powershell
(Get-Service -Name "LanmanServer").DependentServices
(Get-Service -Name "LanmanServer").ServicesDependedOn

Examples

"Is Windows Update service running?" → Get-Service -Name "wuauserv" | Select-Object Name, Status, StartType

"Stop and disable the Print Spooler service" → Stop-Service -Name "Spooler" -Force; Set-Service -Name "Spooler" -StartupType Disabled

"Which automatic services are currently stopped?" → Get-Service | Where-Object { $_.StartType -eq 'Automatic' -and $_.Status -ne 'Running' }

Cautions

  • Stopping critical services (LanmanServer, DHCP, DNS) can disrupt network connectivity
  • Starting/stopping services may require an elevated session depending on the service security descriptor
  • Set-Service -StartupType Disabled prevents the service from starting even manually until re-enabled
  • Use Get-Service | Where-Object Status -eq 'Running' | Measure-Object to get a quick service health count

With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add taracodlabs/aiden --skill windows-services -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/windows-services, .gemini/skills/windows-services, .github/skills/windows-services and .opencode/skills/windows-services in your project.

What does Windows Services need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Windows Services is instructions for the agent only.

Does Windows Services access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Windows Services safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
