What it does

The skill opens with a past incident: a procedure's response changed from a bare array to an object, every caller on main was updated so typecheck and tests passed, yet released desktop builds still called `.map` on the result and workspace views crashed. CI only sees main, so this skill checks the builds it cannot see. Step one is to find released callers by searching release tags rather than main: desktop and CLI tags in a loop starting at the minimum supported version, mobile through main plus `git log -S`, the SDK by procedure string, and host-service procedures, where host and client versions can differ.

Step two checks usage data: the API samples 1% of calls into a PostHog event named `api_procedure_called`, queried with SQL, and zero rows is weak evidence for a rarely used procedure. Step three picks a pattern from a table, for example adding a new procedure when an output shape changes while the old one keeps its shape, and adding inputs only as new optional fields with a default in the handler. Any hit among released callers means the procedure is live and its input and output are frozen.

When your agent uses it

  • Renaming or removing a tRPC procedure, input field or output field
  • Reviewing a PR that touches packages/trpc or packages/host-service
  • Investigating a deploy that broke released desktop or CLI clients
  • Deciding whether a deprecated procedure can finally be removed

Example prompts

  • “I want to change page.list to return an object, so is that safe for released clients?”
  • “Review this PR for tRPC changes that would break old desktop builds.”
  • “Can we delete the deprecated procedure, or are released CLI versions still calling it?”

Requirements

  • A clone with release tags fetched through `git fetch --tags`
  • PostHog usage data, through its SQL editor or MCP

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Find released callers
  2. Check usage data
  3. Pick the pattern
  4. Remove a deprecated procedure or field
  5. If released clients are already broken

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 5021353. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • git
    • gh

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use git and gh, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

tRPC Release Compatibility Check loads about 1.7k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 96 tokens; SKILL.md has 880 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~96
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.7k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 880 words (~1,696 tokens).

“On 2026-09-23, #7726 changed page.list from a bare array to { items, nextCursor }. It updated every caller on main, so typecheck and tests passed. Desktop 1.30.0–1.30.2 still called .map on the result, and every workspace view crashed (SEV1, 337…”
