At a glance

Runs the cmux release process: gathers per-PR changelog lines since the last tag, bumps the version, guards against a bad tag, then tags and pushes the macOS DMG release.

  • Cutting a new cmux release with an updated changelog
  • SKILL.md covers Changelog source, Version bumping, Tagging and Release artifacts and secrets, plus 1 more section
  • Calls git; needs APPLE_CERTIFICATE_PASSWORD and ASC_API_KEY_ID
  • Troubleshooting a failed pretag guard before tagging a release

What it does

The preferred /release command determines the new version, defaulting to a minor bump, gathers a changelog line from each PR merged since the last stable tag, updates CHANGELOG.md, runs the version-bump script, commits, runs a pretag guard script, then tags and pushes. Since feature PRs do not edit CHANGELOG.md directly, each PR instead carries a Changelog section in its description with one Added, Changed, Fixed or Removed line in present tense, or the word none; a bundled jq script classifies every PR fetched since the last tag by that convention.

A Changelog line becomes a changelog entry with a PR link, crediting outside contributors by name; a line of none is skipped, as is a PR later undone by a revert within the same range, while a revert of something shipped in an earlier release gets its own flagged line for a human to check. Version bumping runs a script with minor, patch or major modes that updates the app's marketing and build version numbers, where the build number must keep increasing for the app's auto-update mechanism to work. If the pretag guard fails, the fix is to bump the version again, commit, and retry before tagging.

When your agent uses it

  • Cutting a new cmux release with an updated changelog
  • Troubleshooting a failed pretag guard before tagging a release
  • Checking which merged PRs are missing a proper changelog line

Example prompts

  • “Run the cmux release process for a minor version bump.”
  • “The pretag guard failed, help me fix it and retry the release.”
  • “List which PRs since the last tag are missing a Changelog section.”

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit bbb3633. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • git

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:

    • APPLE_CERTIFICATE_PASSWORD
    • ASC_API_KEY_ID

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Cmux Release Workflow loads about 856 tokens when it runs, and up to ~2.6k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 46 tokens; SKILL.md has 338 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~46
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~856
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~2.6k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 338 words (~856 tokens).

“Prefer the /release command. It determines the new version (minor by default), gathers the Changelog line from each PR merged since the last stable tag, updates CHANGELOG.md, runs ./scripts/bump-version.sh, commits, runs ./scripts/release-pretag-guard.sh, then tags and pushes.”
