At a glance

Covers debug logging, the Debug menu, profiling rules and runtime pitfalls for working on the cmux macOS terminal app.

  • Adding temporary debug probes for focus, tab or split events in cmux
  • SKILL.md covers Debug event log, Profiling, Debug menu and Runtime pitfalls, plus 1 more section
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md
  • Diagnosing UI or runtime issues in terminal rendering and tab or sidebar lists

What it does

The skill tells the agent where debug instrumentation belongs in cmux: the unified DEBUG build log, which records key, mouse, focus, split and tab events. Most probes are temporary and removed before merge. The log is followed with tail and lands in /tmp/cmux-debug.log, or a per-tag file for tagged builds. Calls to cmuxDebugLog are timestamped, backed by a 500-entry ring buffer and must be wrapped in #if DEBUG, and stable event prefixes such as focus.panel, tab.select and pane.drop are listed.

For profiling, the agent attaches to a tagged build's pid with xctrace record or sample, never launches under xctrace or Instruments, and never quits, kills or relaunches the user's running cmux, because it holds live agent sessions. DEBUG builds get a Debug menu, and a new debug window is an NSWindowController subclass registered under Debug Windows and backed by a SwiftUI view with AppStorage bindings.

Runtime pitfalls include declaring custom drag-and-drop UTTypes in Info.plist under UTExportedTypeDeclarations. The description also points to typing-latency-sensitive paths, SwiftUI list snapshot boundaries and OS-version repros, with further notes in reference files on the event log and runtime pitfalls.

When your agent uses it

  • Adding temporary debug probes for focus, tab or split events in cmux
  • Diagnosing UI or runtime issues in terminal rendering and tab or sidebar lists
  • Adding a new window to the Debug menu
  • Profiling a tagged cmux build without disturbing the running app

Example prompts

  • “Add debug logging for tab drag and drop in cmux and show me how to tail the log.”
  • “Profile the tagged build for typing latency by attaching xctrace.”
  • “Add a new tuning panel under Debug Windows for sidebar colors.”

Requirements

  • A checkout of the cmux repository on macOS
  • xctrace or sample for profiling

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 6e85139. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are bash).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Cmux Debugging Guide loads about 1.1k tokens when it runs, and up to ~2.3k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 85 tokens; SKILL.md has 466 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~85
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.1k
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~2.3k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 466 words (~1,120 tokens).

“Put debug event instrumentation (keys, mouse, focus, splits, tabs) in the unified DEBUG build log. This is not a requirement to log every new code path; most probes belong to a dogfood debug loop and are removed before merge.”
