What it does

The skill applies to any change to user-facing text in cmux. After editing copy you run ./scripts/localize-changes, which compares the worktree with the mainline base, finds changed Swift localization keys and English web messages, prepares simple catalog entries and writes a machine-readable translation packet under git metadata. You fill in value for simple translations or localization for plural and variant ones and rerun it. Finished rows are merged by scripts/localization_catalog.py, whose check command is the final validator, and ambiguous cases stop for human attention.

Hard rules require every string in SwiftUI Text, Button, alerts, tooltips, menus and dialogs to use String(localized:defaultValue:) with keys in Resources/Localizable.xcstrings. Each feature pull request needs entries for the supported macOS languages, English and Japanese always, and default values or copied English do not count. Deliberate invariant strings go in an allowed-omissions JSON file. An audit-workflow reference is included, and the excerpt is cut off in the hard rules.

When your agent uses it

  • Adding or changing any user-facing string in the cmux app
  • Preparing translations for a feature pull request in cmux
  • Auditing a branch for untranslated or copied-English strings
  • Deciding whether a literal can be recorded as an allowed omission

Example prompts

  • “I changed the settings menu labels; run the cmux localization flow for this branch.”
  • “Add a localized tooltip to the new workspace button using String(localized:).”
  • “Audit my branch for user-facing strings that are missing Japanese translations.”
  • “Which plural entries in the translation packet still need a localization value?”

Requirements

  • The cmux repository with its localization scripts

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Enumerate the changed user-facing surfaces.
  2. Verify each surface has a catalog key and translated values for every supported macOS locale (en, de, fr, ar, es, zh-Hant, zh-Hans, ko…
  3. Parse the touched localization files and compare changed message keys across locales.
  4. Run rg over changed Swift/TS/TSX/docs files for newly introduced bare English.
  5. State in the final handoff what audit was performed, or explicitly say what could not be verified.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit bbb3633. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • python3

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

cmux Localization Rules loads about 1.3k tokens when it runs, and up to ~1.7k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 58 tokens; SKILL.md has 654 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~58
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.3k
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~1.7k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 654 words (~1,327 tokens).

“Use this skill for any user-facing string change.”
