At a glance

Lays out a user journey as activities, steps, and tasks on a two-dimensional map that then informs backlog slicing.

  • Works in 7 steps: Define the Context → Define the Narrative → Identify Activities (Backbone) → …
  • Planning an MVP slice around an actual user workflow
  • SKILL.md covers Purpose, Input, Key Concepts and Application, plus 3 more sections
  • Reaches github.com

What it does

Jeff Patton's story-mapping method arranges work along two axes: a horizontal backbone of high-level activities broken into steps and tasks in narrative order, and a vertical axis where top rows hold essential MVP tasks and lower rows hold nice-to-have future work. Drawing a horizontal release line across the map turns priority into an actual release plan, and the map itself works as a strategic artifact showing how users reach their goals, which only then determines what gets built.

When your agent uses it

  • Planning an MVP slice around an actual user workflow
  • Building shared understanding across product, design, and engineering
  • Spotting gaps in a user journey before writing backlog items

Example prompts

  • “Story map our expense-reporting flow from receipt capture to reimbursement.”
  • “Draw a release line on this map for the pilot launch.”
  • “Where are the gaps in this user journey before we size the backlog?”

Workflow steps

7 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Define the Context
  2. Define the Narrative
  3. Identify Activities (Backbone)
  4. Break Activities into Steps
  5. Break Steps into Tasks
  6. Prioritize Vertically
  7. Identify Gaps and Opportunities

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 1b5a524. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are markdown).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:

    • github.com

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

User Story Mapping loads about 2.8k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 43 tokens; SKILL.md has 1,027 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~43
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~2.8k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 1,027 words (~2,847 tokens).
