What it does

New is an agent skill from with-pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist. Create a new Aseprite document with the right canvas size, colour mode, palette and layer structure, so later work does not have to fight the setup. Use when starting fresh rather than editing an existing sprite.

Its SKILL.md is about 560 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Game Development, covering Sprites and pixel art. It works with Model Context Protocol. The repository describes itself as: Your coding agent paints pixel art in the Aseprite window you already have open. MCP server + skills for Claude Code, omp, Codex, Gemini CLI and Cursor — draws, looks at its…. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

Workflow steps

6 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. preflight. Stop if not ready.
  2. Create the canvas.
  3. Set the palette before drawing.
  4. Build the layer structure in one batch, so it is one undo step
  5. Save immediately, so the user has a file and undo has an anchor
  6. Confirm what you made in one line: size, mode, palette, layers.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit f51fe69. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

New loads about 555 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 54 tokens; SKILL.md has 238 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~54
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~555

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Create a sprite document

Create a sprite document

Set-up mistakes are expensive to undo: a canvas that is the wrong size means redrawing, and a palette chosen after the art means repainting. Get these four things right and the rest of the work is drawing.

Procedure

  1. preflight. Stop if not ready.

  2. Create the canvas.

    sprite_manage op="new" width=32 height=32 colorMode="rgb"
    • Use RGB unless the user wants hard palette enforcement at the file level. Indexed mode makes the palette a hard constraint Aseprite itself enforces — good for a strict retro target, awkward for iteration.
    • Size to the game's grid if there is one: a 16×16 tile game wants character sprites that are a multiple of 16 in at least one dimension.
    • Leave headroom. A 32×32 canvas for a 28px-tall character gives room for a weapon raise or a jump squash without a later canvas resize.
  3. Set the palette before drawing.

    palette op="preset" preset="pico8" replace=true

Or build one: palette op="ramp" base="#c04030" steps=5 per material. See rules://01-palette-and-color.

  4. Build the layer structure in one batch, so it is one undo step:

    layer batch=[
      {op:"create", name:"sketch"},
      {op:"create", name:"base"},
      {op:"create", name:"shading"},
      {op:"create", name:"outline"},
    ]

For anything that will be animated, build the full character rig instead — see aseprite:rig. Splitting baked pixels apart later is real work.

  5. Save immediately, so the user has a file and undo has an anchor:

    sprite_manage op="save_as" path="…/knight.aseprite"

Ask where, or put it beside whatever project the user is working in.

  6. Confirm what you made in one line: size, mode, palette, layers.

Then

aseprite:draw to block in the art.

Can I use New in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add with-pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist --skill new -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/new, .gemini/skills/new, .github/skills/new and .opencode/skills/new in your project.

What does New need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: New is instructions for the agent only.

Does New access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is New safe to install?
