At a glance

Guidance for running the Tinybird tb CLI: choosing local, branch or cloud workflows, building and deploying, loading data, handling tokens and secrets, and CI/CD.

  • Running tb commands in a Tinybird project
  • SKILL.md covers When to Apply, Rule Files and Quick Reference
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md
  • Choosing between local, branch and cloud development

What it does

The SKILL.md is an index to eleven rule files covering development workflows, CLI commands, build and deploy, local development, branch development, CI/CD, data operations, appending data, mock data, tokens and secrets. It applies whenever the agent runs any tb command, picks a workflow, appends, replaces or deletes data, or generates mock data and tests.

A quick reference sets the CLI 4.0 flow: configure dev_mode once in tinybird.config.json, then use plain tb build for the chosen development environment and tb deploy for Tinybird Cloud production, with explicit cloud, local or branch flags only as manual overrides. It also says to check context with tb info, test endpoints with tb endpoint data, and run help instead of inventing commands or flags.

When your agent uses it

  • Running tb commands in a Tinybird project
  • Choosing between local, branch and cloud development
  • Setting up CI/CD for Tinybird deployments
  • Appending, replacing or deleting data in a data source

Example prompts

  • “Deploy this Tinybird project to production and tell me which flags you used.”
  • “Test the top_pages endpoint locally and show me its output.”
  • “Generate mock data for the events data source and append it locally.”

Requirements

  • The Tinybird CLI (tb)
  • A Tinybird project

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 7aecaf7. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Tinybird CLI Guidelines loads about 388 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 44 tokens; SKILL.md has 153 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~44
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~388

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

  • Choosing a development workflow (local, branch, or cloud)
  • Local development with Tinybird Local
  • Branch development with Tinybird Cloud branches
  • Building and deploying projects
  • Setting up CI/CD pipelines
  • Appending, replacing, or deleting data
  • Managing tokens and secrets via CLI
  • Generating mock data
  • Running tests

Rule Files

  • rules/development-workflows.md
  • rules/cli-commands.md
  • rules/build-deploy.md
  • rules/local-development.md

  • rules/ci-cd.md
  • rules/data-operations.md
  • rules/append-data.md
  • rules/mock-data.md
  • rules/tokens.md
  • rules/secrets.md

Quick Reference

  • CLI 4.0 workflow: configure dev_mode once, then use plain tb build and tb deploy.
  • tb build targets your configured development environment (branch or local) in tinybird.config.json.
  • tb deploy targets Tinybird Cloud production.
  • Use --cloud/--local/--branch only as explicit manual overrides.
  • Use tb info to check CLI context.
  • Use tb endpoint data <pipe> to test endpoints (not tb pipe data).
  • Never invent commands or flags; run tb <command> --help to verify.
