What it does

The skill applies whenever you ask for a commit of the current work. The agent reviews `git status`, `git diff` and the recent log, stages only files that belong to the change, and leaves out unrelated untracked files, generated files and local artifacts. Message conventions are not restated; the agent reads and follows the commit message section of `.github/CONTRIBUTING.md`, which is the source of truth for the project.

For publishable packages it checks whether a release intent is needed: a package `README.md` is published and needs one, while repository-only Markdown such as `AGENTS.md`, changelogs and package-local `docs/` does not. After committing it runs `git status --short` to confirm the result. It does not push unless asked, avoids empty commits, keeps commits focused, and fixes a failing hook with a new commit and never bypasses it.

When your agent uses it

  • Committing finished work in the Ghost repository
  • Splitting unrelated changes into separate focused commits
  • Checking whether a package change needs a release intent

Example prompts

  • “Commit my changes to the members settings screen.”
  • “Stage only the files for the newsletter fix and commit them, leaving the rest alone.”
  • “Does my README change in the admin package need a release intent before I commit?”

Requirements

  • Git in a checkout of the Ghost repository

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Review the current git state before committing
  2. Only stage files relevant to the requested change. Do not include unrelated untracked files, generated files, or likely-local artifacts.
  3. Read and follow .github/CONTRIBUTING.md#commit-messages. It is the

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 7aecaf7. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • git

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use git, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Ghost Commit Workflow loads about 286 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 12 tokens; SKILL.md has 157 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~12
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Commit

Use this skill whenever the user asks you to create a git commit for the current work.

Instructions

  1. Review the current git state before committing:
    • git status
    • git diff
    • git log -5 --oneline
  2. Only stage files relevant to the requested change. Do not include unrelated untracked files, generated files, or likely-local artifacts.
  3. Read and follow .github/CONTRIBUTING.md#commit-messages. It is the source of truth for Ghost's commit conventions.
  4. For publishable packages, check whether a release intent is required. A package README.md is published and requires a release; repository-only Markdown such as AGENTS.md, changelogs, and package-local docs/ does not.
  5. Run git status --short after committing and confirm the result.

Important

  • Do not push to remote unless the user explicitly asks
  • Keep commits focused and avoid bundling unrelated changes
  • If there are no relevant changes, do not create an empty commit
  • If hooks fail, fix the issue and create a new commit. Never bypass hooks.
