What it does

Bevy Sprites is an agent skill from nolantait/bevy-starter. Reference for Bevy sprites — rendering images, custom size, anchors, z-ordering, sprite sheets, texture atlases, pixel-perfect rendering, and bounding boxes.

Its SKILL.md is about 630 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Game Development, covering Sprites and pixel art and Design to code. The repository describes itself as: A minimalist starter for bevy and rust. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • Tasks that involve Sprites and pixel art
  • Tasks that involve Design to code

Example prompts

  • “/bevy-sprites”

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit dd6f56b. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

    Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

    From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are rust).

    From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

    From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

    Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

    From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Bevy Sprites loads about 630 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 43 tokens; SKILL.md has 74 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~43
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~630

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Basic sprite

rust
commands.spawn(Sprite {
  image: asset_server.load("sprites/ball.png"),
  ..default()
});

Shorthand: Sprite::from_image(handle) or Sprite::from_color(color, size) for prototyping.

Custom size vs transform scale

  • custom_size: Some(Vec2::new(100., 100.)) — sprite is that size
  • Transform::scale — sprite looks scaled (affects children too)

Anchors

Default is Anchor::Center. Other variants: BOTTOM_LEFT, TOP_RIGHT, etc. Custom: Anchor(Vec2) with relative values (e.g., (-0.5, 0.5) = top-left).

Z-ordering

Higher Transform.translation.z renders on top:

rust
commands.spawn((Sprite { .. }, Transform::from_xyz(0., 0., 1.))); // on top

Sprite sheets (TextureAtlasLayout)

rust
#[derive(Resource)]
struct PlayerSpriteSheet(Handle<TextureAtlasLayout>);

impl FromWorld for PlayerSpriteSheet {
  fn from_world(world: &mut World) -> Self {
    let layout = TextureAtlasLayout::from_grid(UVec2::splat(24), 7, 1, None, None);
    let mut atlases = world.get_resource_mut::<Assets<TextureAtlasLayout>>().unwrap();
    Self(atlases.add(layout))
  }
}

fn spawn(mut commands: Commands, sheet: Res<PlayerSpriteSheet>, server: Res<AssetServer>) {
  commands.spawn(Sprite {
    image: server.load("player.png"),
    texture_atlas: Some(TextureAtlas { layout: sheet.0.clone(), index: 0 }),
    ..default()
  });
}

Texture atlas builder

Combine separate images into one sprite sheet:

rust
let mut builder = TextureAtlasBuilder::default();
builder.add_texture(Some(id), texture);
let (layout, sources, atlas_image) = builder.build().unwrap();
textures.add(atlas_image);

Tiled sprites

rust
Sprite {
  image_mode: SpriteImageMode::Tiled { tile_x: true, tile_y: true, stretch_value: 0.5 },
  ..default()
}

Bounding box of transformed sprites

rust
fn bounds(sprites: Query<(&Transform, &Sprite)>, assets: Res<Assets<Image>>) {
  for (t, sprite) in &sprites {
    let image_size = assets.get(&sprite.image).unwrap().size_f32();
    let scaled = image_size * t.scale.truncate();
    let bbox = Rect::from_center_size(t.translation.truncate(), scaled);
  }
}

Pixel-perfect rendering

rust
app.add_plugins(DefaultPlugins.set(ImagePlugin::default_nearest()));
