At a glance

Rules for advancing an interactive story or open world in an InkOS Play session: honor the world contract, finish actions, keep state and time consistent.

  • Resolving the next player action in an interactive fiction or branching story session
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md
  • Keeping characters, items and clues consistent as scenes advance
  • Rewriting a scene's style without changing what happened in it

What it does

This skill sets the rules an agent follows when advancing an interactive story or open-world game inside an InkOS Play session, whatever the genre. The world contract you set is the authority: the agent adds no RPG levels, fixed ticks, romance meters, equipment tiers or other game systems you did not establish. Each player action is carried out as requested, with routine movement and preparation handled without another turn, and play stops only at a real obstacle, interruption or new decision, which the scene makes concrete.

It insists on visible results. A direct question gets an actual answer, refusal, lie or interruption right away, and a feasible action is shown finished rather than left as about to happen for the sake of a cliffhanger. The world keeps moving, with time passing and NPCs pursuing their own goals, but the agent never performs an action the player did not choose, and negation is preserved exactly: if the player did not open the door, the text must not imply it.

People, places, objects, clues, relationships and time must match the world graph. When someone moves, an item changes hands or a clue is resolved, current state is updated and outdated relationship records are expired so the old situation does not compete with the new one. When a scene is rewritten, its settled state and completed actions stay fixed. A reference file, `references/world-turn-continuity.md`, expands on turn continuity.

When your agent uses it

  • Resolving the next player action in an interactive fiction or branching story session
  • Keeping characters, items and clues consistent as scenes advance
  • Rewriting a scene's style without changing what happened in it

Example prompts

  • “The player opens the cellar door and goes down. Resolve that action and update where everyone is.”
  • “Rewrite this scene in a quieter, more formal style but keep every action and choice the same.”
  • “The player asks the guard directly about the missing key. Answer in the scene now.”

Requirements

  • An active InkOS Play operation with a world graph

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 8fc2ae5. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

InkOS Interactive World Play loads about 793 tokens when it runs, and up to ~1.1k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 30 tokens; SKILL.md has 467 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~30
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~793
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~1.1k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Interactive world play

Apply this method inside an active InkOS Play operation.

  • Treat the user's world contract as authority. Do not add RPG levels, fixed ticks, romance meters, equipment tiers, or other game systems unless the user established them.
  • When resolving a new player action, carry out the requested action or sequence within the player's choices. Routine movement and preparation do not require another turn. Stop when a real obstacle, interruption, or genuinely new decision prevents continuation; make that cause concrete in the scene and state.
  • Complete the visible result of actions that can finish under the established conditions. A direct question gets an answer, refusal, lie, interruption, or other concrete response now. Do not replace a feasible requested result with being ready, approaching, or about to do it merely to create a cliffhanger. Show enough movement, contact and consequence to make completion clear.
  • When rewriting an existing scene, its settled state and completed actions stay fixed. Apply the narrative style guidance, while leaving action resolution, time advancement and choices unchanged.
  • Keep the world alive while preserving agency: time passes naturally, NPCs pursue their own goals, and off-screen pressure can move, but never make the player's unchosen action for them.
  • Preserve negation exactly. If the player did not touch, take, open, attack, leave, or speak, do not imply that they did.
  • Keep people, places, objects, clues, relationships, holdings, and time consistent with the world graph. Reuse existing entity identities, advance states one step at a time, and create only concrete facts made real by the scene.
  • When a person moves, an object changes hands, or a clue is resolved, synchronize its current status and any existing tracked state. Expire the exact old relationship IDs that have ceased to be true; leaving an earlier location or holding active makes it a competing current fact. Preserve past observations as history, and do not equate a remembered or suspected location with present physical location.
  • Use the current graph's relationships and tracked state after author edits. Earlier scene summaries describe earlier events and do not undo those edits. Update entity summaries when their wording incorrectly presents an old situation as current.
  • Render a playable novel beat, not a system log. Bridge from the player's action, let the beat breathe, and stop on an immediate image, pressure, or changed situation rather than an epilogue or moral.
  • Observation, waiting, idle conversation, and stillness are valid turns. Give them a living detail while the wider world continues on its own clock; never nag the player to act.
  • Open worlds accept free input. Guided worlds may offer sparse optional springboards at genuine forks, but narrative prose never becomes an A/B/C menu and companions never act as option dispensers.
  • Use visual and rarity rules only when they are part of the current world's explicit visual contract.
