At a glance

Indexes a local file or project directory into context-mode's FTS5 knowledge base so later searches return focused snippets instead of rereading whole files.

  • Works in 6 steps: Prefer the ctx_index MCP tool when it is… → Ask for a path only if the user did not… → Use path, not large inline content, so… → …
  • Indexing a project directory for later focused search
  • SKILL.md covers Instructions and Safety
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md

What it does

The agent prefers the ctx_index MCP tool when it is present, passing a path rather than inlining large content so file bytes stay out of the conversation. For a whole repository it applies conservative bounds and a clear source label, and it falls back to the context-mode CLI's index command when MCP tools are unavailable.

After indexing, it reports the source label, the number of files or sections indexed, and the matching ctx_search call to use afterward. The skill tells the agent not to index dependency folders, build output, secrets or generated artifacts, to prefer exclude patterns for noisy project-specific paths, and to ask before raising the maximum file count above 500 on a broad repository.

When your agent uses it

  • Indexing a project directory for later focused search
  • Adding a new local document to the knowledge base
  • Re-indexing a repository before running searches against it

Example prompts

  • “Index this repository so I can search it later without rereading files.”
  • “Index the docs folder under the source label project:billing-service.”
  • “Index this repo but exclude the dist and vendor folders.”

Requirements

  • The context-mode MCP server or CLI

Workflow steps

6 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Prefer the ctx_index MCP tool when it is available.
  2. Ask for a path only if the user did not provide one and the current project root is ambiguous.
  3. Use path, not large inline content, so file bytes do not enter the conversation.
  4. For repository indexing, pass conservative bounds and a clear source label
  5. If MCP tools are unavailable, fall back to the CLI
  6. Report the indexed source label, file count or section count, and the matching search command

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 0dfbe8d. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are javascript and bash).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Context Mode Indexer loads about 328 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 53 tokens; SKILL.md has 126 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~53
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~328

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 126 words (~328 tokens).

“Index local project content for later search.”

Questions about Context Mode Indexer

What does Context Mode Indexer do?

Indexes a local file or project directory into context-mode's FTS5 knowledge base so later searches return focused snippets instead of rereading whole files. The agent prefers the ctx_index MCP tool when it is present, passing a path rather than inlining large content so file bytes stay out of the conversation. For a whole repository it applies conservative bounds and a clear source label, and it falls back to the context-mode CLI's index command when MCP tools are unavailable.

When should I use Context Mode Indexer?

Context Mode Indexer fits situations like: indexing a project directory for later focused search; adding a new local document to the knowledge base; re-indexing a repository before running searches against it.

How do I install Context Mode Indexer in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add mksglu/context-mode --skill ctx-index -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/ctx-index in mksglu/context-mode) into .claude/skills/ctx-index in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

How do I install Context Mode Indexer in Codex?

Run `npx skills add mksglu/context-mode --skill ctx-index -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/ctx-index in mksglu/context-mode) into .agents/skills/ctx-index in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.

Can I use Context Mode Indexer in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add mksglu/context-mode --skill ctx-index -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/ctx-index, .gemini/skills/ctx-index, .github/skills/ctx-index and .opencode/skills/ctx-index in your project.

What does Context Mode Indexer need to run?

SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Context Mode Indexer is instructions for the agent only. Our summary lists: The context-mode MCP server or CLI.

Does Context Mode Indexer access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Context Mode Indexer safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Context Mode Indexer use?

Context Mode Indexer has a licence file (the repository's licence) that doesn't match a standard licence. Read it on GitHub before reusing the skill.

How many tokens does Context Mode Indexer use?

About 328 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 1.3k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.

What are the alternatives to Context Mode Indexer?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Context Mode Indexer: Outline (Vortiago/mcp-outline, 156 stars), Qmd MCP Skill (holon-run/uxc, 116 stars), Documentation Server (andrea9293/mcp-documentation-server, 343 stars) and Open Knowledge (inkeep/open-knowledge, 4.5k stars).
