At a glance

Analyzes one research paper in depth, writing a structured note on its methods, experiments and limitations and adding it to a paper relationship graph.

  • Works in 5 steps: Identify Paper → Fetch Paper Content → Deep Analysis → …
  • You want a detailed note on one specific paper, identified by arXiv ID or title
  • SKILL.md covers Canonical Summary, Trigger Rules, Resource Use Rules and Execution Contract, plus 6 more sections
  • Runs Python scripts from its folder; calls curl and python; reaches arxiv.org

What it does

Hand the agent an arXiv ID such as 2402.12345 or arXiv:2402.12345, a paper title or a file path. It downloads the PDF, the e-print source and the abstract page from arxiv.org into a temporary folder, then works through the abstract, methodology, experiments, results, contributions, limitations, future work and related papers.

Two bundled Python scripts finish the job: `scripts/generate_note.py` creates a structured note from the paper ID, title, authors and domain, and `scripts/update_graph.py` records the paper, with a score, in a relationship graph. The stated goal is notes with an abstract translation, a methodology breakdown, an experiment evaluation, strengths and limitations, and a related-work comparison. The scripts are optional helpers: if a dependency is missing the agent explains the blocker and continues manually, and generated files go into the project workspace, not the skill folder.

When your agent uses it

  • You want a detailed note on one specific paper, identified by arXiv ID or title
  • Adding a paper's methodology and results to a growing knowledge graph
  • Weighing a paper's strengths and limitations against related work

Example prompts

  • “Analyze arXiv:2402.12345 and write up a full note on it.”
  • “Do a deep read of the paper at ./papers/attention-variants.pdf and add it to the graph.”
  • “Summarize the experiments and limitations of this paper, then update the knowledge graph.”

Requirements

  • Python 3 for the two bundled scripts
  • curl and network access to arxiv.org

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Identify Paper
  2. Fetch Paper Content
  3. Deep Analysis
  4. Generate Note
  5. Update Knowledge Graph

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 6baece9. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 2 files in scripts/ (Python), which the agent can run.

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • curl
    • python

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:

    • arxiv.org

    Also links to:

    • github.com

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Paper Analyzer loads about 973 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 32 tokens; SKILL.md has 295 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~32
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~973

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

Canonical Summary

Deep analysis of a single paper — generate structured notes with figures, evaluation, and knowledge graph updates

Trigger Rules

Use this skill when the user request matches its research workflow scope. Prefer the bundled resources instead of recreating templates or reference material. Keep outputs traceable to project files, citations, scripts, or upstream evidence.

Resource Use Rules

  • Treat scripts/ as optional helpers. Run them only when their dependencies are available, keep outputs in the project workspace, and explain a manual fallback if execution is blocked.

Execution Contract

  • Resolve every relative path from this skill directory first.
  • Prefer inspection before mutation when invoking bundled scripts.
  • If a required runtime, CLI, credential, or API is unavailable, explain the blocker and continue with the best manual fallback instead of silently skipping the step.
  • Do not write generated artifacts back into the skill directory; save them inside the active project workspace.

Upstream Instructions

You are the Paper Analyzer for Dr. Claw.

Goal

Perform deep analysis of a specific paper, generating comprehensive notes including abstract translation, methodology breakdown, experiment evaluation, strengths/limitations analysis, and related work comparison.

Workflow

Step 1: Identify Paper

Accept input: arXiv ID (e.g., "2402.12345"), full ID ("arXiv:2402.12345"), paper title, or file path.

Step 2: Fetch Paper Content

bash
curl -L "https://arxiv.org/pdf/[PAPER_ID]" -o /tmp/paper_analysis/[PAPER_ID].pdf
curl -L "https://arxiv.org/e-print/[PAPER_ID]" -o /tmp/paper_analysis/[PAPER_ID].tar.gz
curl -s "https://arxiv.org/abs/[PAPER_ID]" > /tmp/paper_analysis/arxiv_page.html

Step 3: Deep Analysis

Analyze: abstract, methodology, experiments, results, contributions, limitations, future work, related papers.

Step 4: Generate Note

bash
python scripts/generate_note.py --paper-id "$PAPER_ID" --title "$TITLE" --authors "$AUTHORS" --domain "$DOMAIN"

Step 5: Update Knowledge Graph

bash
python scripts/update_graph.py --paper-id "$PAPER_ID" --title "$TITLE" --domain "$DOMAIN" --score $SCORE

Scripts

  • scripts/generate_note.py — Generate structured note template
  • scripts/update_graph.py — Update paper relationship graph

Note Structure

The generated note includes: core info, abstract (EN/CN), research background, method overview with architecture figures, experiment results with tables, deep analysis, related paper comparison, tech roadmap positioning, future work, and comprehensive evaluation (0-10 scoring).

Dependencies

  • Python 3.8+, PyYAML, requests
  • Network access (arXiv)
