paperseekRoutes literature searches through the PaperSeek launcher, picks suitable scholarly sources, parses JSON output and keeps API keys out of the chat.
The skill bundles a self-contained Python runtime in scripts/, so core searches work even when the full PaperSeek package is missing; if the package is installed, the launcher hands off to it for the complete CLI and Web UI. The standalone runtime handles search, smoke, sources, doctor, config listing and history path using only the standard library. Sources include OpenAlex, arXiv, Semantic Scholar, PubMed, Crossref, WoS Starter and computer science top conferences, with Google Scholar available through Serper.
Three reference files cover management (install, doctor, smoke, config and secrets), source routing (which source fits and whether citation expansion applies) and the exact CLI contract. When a reference disagrees with the live CLI output, the agent trusts the CLI and reports that the reference may need an update. It starts uncertain environments with the doctor and sources commands, never asks you to paste API keys into chat, and avoids downloading paywalled PDFs.
6 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit ced3100. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Ships 2 files in scripts/ (Python), which the agent can run.

Bundles a self-contained Python standard-library runtime for core OpenAlex/arXiv/Semantic Scholar/PubMed/computer science top-conference/Crossref/WoS literature search. The full PaperSeek package is optional and used automatically when installed.
From compatibility in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
PaperSeek Literature Search loads about 1.6k tokens when it runs, and up to ~5.3k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 109 tokens; SKILL.md has 674 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.
The full file from MingfengHong/paperseek at commit ced3100, republished under its Apache-2.0 licence (© MingfengHong). 674 words, ~1,576 tokens.
.claude/skills/paperseek/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder). This skill also uses 5 other files; get the full folder from GitHub.You are using PaperSeek as an LLM-based literature search agent. This Skill includes a self-contained runtime under scripts/ and can run core literature search even when the PaperSeek Python package is not installed. When the package is installed, the launcher automatically delegates to the full CLI/Web/source implementation.
doctor, smoke, config, health checks, and secrets handling, read references/management-layer.md.references/source-routing.md.references/cli-contract.md.paperseek --help, paperseek sources --json, or paperseek doctor --json, trust the live CLI and report that the Skill reference may need an update. When the environment is uncertain, start with:
python skills/paperseek/scripts/paperseek.py doctor
python skills/paperseek/scripts/paperseek.py sourcesFor a minimal live source test:
python skills/paperseek/scripts/paperseek.py smoke --source openalex --query "machine learning" --jsonFor install guidance or full Web UI/citation-map features:
python skills/paperseek/scripts/paperseek.py --install-helpThe launcher skills/paperseek/scripts/paperseek.py first tries the full PaperSeek package. If that package is unavailable, it falls back to scripts/paperseek_skill_runtime.py, which implements standalone search, smoke, sources, doctor, config list/path/keys, and history path using only the Python standard library.
Do not ask the user to paste API keys into chat. Ask them to configure keys locally with environment variables, paperseek config set ..., or the Web UI session fields.

PaperSeek Literature Search fits situations like: searching for papers from a natural-language research question; checking whether PaperSeek and its sources are configured correctly; choosing between OpenAlex, arXiv, PubMed and other sources for a topic; exporting a ranked paper list or exploring a citation map.
Run `npx skills add MingfengHong/paperseek --skill paperseek -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/paperseek in MingfengHong/paperseek) into .claude/skills/paperseek in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add MingfengHong/paperseek --skill paperseek -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/paperseek in MingfengHong/paperseek) into .agents/skills/paperseek in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add MingfengHong/paperseek --skill paperseek -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/paperseek, .gemini/skills/paperseek, .github/skills/paperseek and .opencode/skills/paperseek in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, PaperSeek Literature Search needs Python for the scripts in its folder, the command-line tools its instructions call (python) and credentials named LLM_API_KEY, OPENALEX_API_KEY and WOS_API_KEY. Our summary lists: Python to run the bundled launcher; API keys for some sources, configured locally through environment variables. Compatibility (from SKILL.md): Bundles a self-contained Python standard-library runtime for core OpenAlex/arXiv/Semantic Scholar/PubMed/computer science top-conference/Crossref/WoS literature search. The full PaperSeek package is optional and used automatically when installed..
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.
PaperSeek Literature Search is published under the Apache-2.0 licence (declared in SKILL.md). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 1.6k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 6.3k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 3.7k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.
Skills that share tags, products or a category with PaperSeek Literature Search: Literature Review (K-Dense-AI/scientific-agent-skills, 48k stars), Literature Review (neflibata-feng/MyArxiv-Agent, 126 stars), Paper Research on arXiv (XiaomiMiMo/MiMo-Code, 14k stars) and Daily arXiv Paper Brief (juliye2025/evil-read-arxiv, 1.7k stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.
