fredLooks up US and global macro series from St. Louis Fed FRED, such as CPI, GDP, Fed funds, yields, M2 and the dollar index, and reports them with units and dates.
The skill turns everyday phrasing into a FRED series ID, first through a curated aliases.json that holds English and Chinese names, and when no alias fits, through scripts/search.py, which picks the most popular series that is not discontinued. scripts/series.py then returns the observations and metadata for that series. Triggers include inflation measures, GDP, unemployment and nonfarm payrolls, Fed funds and SOFR, Treasury yields and the yield curve, M1 and M2, the dollar index, VIX, breakevens, oil and gold prices, consumer sentiment, housing starts and retail sales.
The reply narrates the data in plain language with units, frequency and last update date, and credits the St. Louis Fed (FRED) as the source. The scripts print JSON with an ok flag and a list of dated values, and their exit codes tell the agent how to react to errors. Environment settings load automatically from a .env file at the project root, or from ~/.config/market-intel/env as a fallback, and replies follow the language you write in, English or Chinese.
3 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 8fa9a03. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Ships 2 files in scripts/ (Python), which the agent can run.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
python3From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
Links to these hosts (documentation or services it may open):
fred.stlouisfed.orgFrom URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:
FRED_API_KEYFrom names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
FRED Macro Time Series loads about 1.1k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 25 tokens; SKILL.md has 306 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.
nt is auto-loaded on script import from `.env` at project root (or `~/.config/market-intel/env` as fallback) — no manualed.org/docs/api/api_key.html and add to `.env` at project root. |Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.
Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 306 words (~1,055 tokens).

Run `npx skills add kansoku-trade/kansoku --skill fred -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (.claude/skills/fred in kansoku-trade/kansoku) into .claude/skills/fred in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add kansoku-trade/kansoku --skill fred -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/fred, .gemini/skills/fred, .github/skills/fred and .opencode/skills/fred in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, FRED Macro Time Series needs Python for the scripts in its folder, the command-line tools its instructions call (python3) and credentials named FRED_API_KEY. Our summary lists: Python 3; Settings in a .env file at the project root or in ~/.config/market-intel/env; Network access to FRED.
SKILL.md names 1 domain. As links in the text: fred.stlouisfed.org. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found notes only (mentions a .env file), nothing it rates as a warning. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.
FRED Macro Time Series has a licence file (the repository's licence) that doesn't match a standard licence. Read it on GitHub before reusing the skill.
About 1.1k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 4.2k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
Skills that share tags, products or a category with FRED Macro Time Series: Kql (microsoft/fabric-rti-mcp, 131 stars), Data Scientist (davila7/claude-code-templates, 33k stars), Scientific Toolkit Skill (zLanqing/codex-claude-academic-skills, 4.7k stars) and Data Science (travisjneuman/.claude, 100 stars).
