At a glance

Maintains a project-scoped Obsidian research knowledge base: bootstrapping its folders, routing notes, updating hub, plan and index notes, and linting.

  • Setting up an Obsidian knowledge base for a new research project
  • SKILL.md covers Core rules, Responsibilities, Deterministic helpers and Read next
  • Runs Python scripts from its folder
  • Filing a new note or experiment result into the right folder

What it does

This is the main workflow skill for keeping a research project's knowledge in an Obsidian vault under a `Research/` folder named for the project. It detects and binds the current repo to a project root, creates the skeleton with `00-Hub.md`, `01-Plan.md`, `02-Index.md` and folders for sources, knowledge, experiments, results, writing, daily notes, maps and archive, and routes new notes into the right place.

Durable knowledge stays inside the project folder, `_system/registry.md` is the only visible project registry, and repo-local `.claude/project-memory` files serve only as the runtime binding layer. Helper scripts do the deterministic work of scaffolding, registry consistency, link, index and canvas checks and lint aggregation, while the agent handles note routing, daily promotion, source versus knowledge judgments and semantic hub and index updates. Lifecycle actions include create, update, rename, archive, purge, promote and link repair, and a reference file covers each area.

When your agent uses it

  • Setting up an Obsidian knowledge base for a new research project
  • Filing a new note or experiment result into the right folder
  • Running a lint pass over a project vault's links, index and registry

Example prompts

  • “Bootstrap a project knowledge base for my protein folding study in the vault.”
  • “Promote today's daily log into the knowledge notes and update the hub and index.”
  • “Run the project KB lint and fix the broken links it reports.”

Requirements

  • An Obsidian vault
  • Python to run the helper scripts

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 9037873. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

Ships 8 files in scripts/ (Python), which the agent can run.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Obsidian Project Knowledge Base loads about 551 tokens when it runs, and up to ~1.8k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 75 tokens; SKILL.md has 182 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~75
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~551
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~1.8k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.

description
Use this as the main Claude Scholar skill for a vault-first, project-scoped Obsidian research knowledge base rooted at Research/{project-slug}/. It owns bootstrap, routing, daily logging, hub/plan/index maintenance, registry updates, lifecycle actions, and lint orchestration.

Obsidian Project KB Core

This is the main workflow authority for project-scoped Obsidian knowledge maintenance.

Default project root:

text
Research/{project-slug}/

Default structure:

text
00-Hub.md
01-Plan.md
02-Index.md
Sources/
Knowledge/
Experiments/
Results/
  Reports/
Writing/
Daily/
Maps/
Archive/
_system/

Core rules

  • Keep all durable project knowledge inside the current Research/{project-slug}/.
  • Keep repo-local .claude/project-memory/* only as the runtime binding layer.
  • _system/registry.md is the only visible project registry.
  • 02-Index.md is a human navigation note, not a registry mirror.
  • Maps/ is a derived-artifact area; do not generate non-essential canvases by default.
  • Results/Reports/ is the default subdirectory for round and batch experiment reports.

Responsibilities

  • detect and bind the current repo to a project root
  • bootstrap the project skeleton
  • route notes into Sources / Knowledge / Experiments / Results / Results/Reports / Writing / Daily / Maps / Archive
  • update 00-Hub.md, 01-Plan.md, 02-Index.md
  • update _system/registry.md, _system/schema.md, _system/lint-report.md
  • handle note lifecycle actions: create, update, rename, archive, purge, promote, and link repair
  • run deterministic health checks through helper scripts

Deterministic helpers

Use the scripts under scripts/ for:

  • scaffold
  • registry consistency
  • link checks
  • index checks
  • canvas checks
  • lint aggregation

Use agents for:

  • note routing
  • daily promotion decisions
  • source vs knowledge judgment
  • stable-result judgment
  • semantic Hub and Index updates
  • references/DIRECTORY-SCHEMA.md
  • references/HUB-PLAN-INDEX.md
  • references/REGISTRY.md
  • references/DAILY-PROMOTION.md
  • references/LIFECYCLE.md
  • references/LINT.md

Can I use Obsidian Project Knowledge Base in Cursor, Gemini CLI or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add Galaxy-Dawn/claude-scholar --skill obsidian-project-kb-core -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/obsidian-project-kb-core, .gemini/skills/obsidian-project-kb-core, .github/skills/obsidian-project-kb-core and .opencode/skills/obsidian-project-kb-core in your project.

What does Obsidian Project Knowledge Base need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Obsidian Project Knowledge Base needs Python for the scripts in its folder. Our summary lists: An Obsidian vault; Python to run the helper scripts.

Does Obsidian Project Knowledge Base access the network?

SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Obsidian Project Knowledge Base safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.

What licence does Obsidian Project Knowledge Base use?

Obsidian Project Knowledge Base is published under the MIT licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Obsidian Project Knowledge Base use?

About 551 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 2.2k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 1.3k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.
