What it does

Ambient Context Tune Rules is an agent skill from dragthelake/ambient-context. Use when the user says something should not be captured, is landing in the wrong file, keeps showing up in summaries, or asks to tidy or review their Ambient Context rules. Proposes rule changes as a diff and applies them only after the user agrees.

Its SKILL.md is about 500 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

The repository describes itself as: A menu bar app that keeps a written record of what you worked on. The licence is Apache-2.0.

Workflow steps

6 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. list_rules first. Read the built-in rules as well as the user's; many requests are already covered, and built-ins cannot be weakened.
  2. Find the evidence. search_record for the app, site or phrase the user named, or read_day on the window they mean. Quote the heading, not…
  3. Draft the smallest change that does what they asked: one rule where one will do. Prefer editing an existing rule over adding a…
  4. Show the change as a diff: the rule before (or "none") and the rule after, with one line on what it will stop or move from the next…
  5. Wait for a yes. Then apply with add_rule, update_rule or remove_rule, one call per rule.
  6. Confirm in one line what was applied and that it is in today's ledger.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 7e57155. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Ambient Context Tune Rules loads about 496 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 69 tokens; SKILL.md has 262 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~69
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~496

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Tune rules

Follow the ambient-context skill's conventions. This skill writes, so the app must be open; capture_status returning not_running means stop and say so.

A rule has a target (an app, a website or a window title) and an action: exclude (never keep), headings_only (keep the block heading, drop the body), full (keep everything, overriding a broader rule) or route_messages (send the block to the messages file). Every rule change is logged in the ledger with this client's name.

Steps

  1. list_rules first. Read the built-in rules as well as the user's; many requests are already covered, and built-ins cannot be weakened.
  2. Find the evidence. search_record for the app, site or phrase the user named, or read_day on the window they mean. Quote the heading, not the body.
  3. Draft the smallest change that does what they asked: one rule where one will do. Prefer editing an existing rule over adding a near-duplicate.
  4. Show the change as a diff: the rule before (or "none") and the rule after, with one line on what it will stop or move from the next snapshot on. Say that text already recorded is not changed.
  5. Wait for a yes. Then apply with add_rule, update_rule or remove_rule, one call per rule.
  6. Confirm in one line what was applied and that it is in today's ledger.

Do not

  • Apply anything before the user agrees, even a removal they asked for.
  • Add a rule from a single occurrence without saying it was one occurrence.
  • Change the prompt or config here; that is a different request.
