proto-personaSynthesizes existing research, market signals, and team knowledge into a working persona hypothesis, flagged for later validation.
A proto-persona differs from a validated one in speed and confidence: it's built in hours or days from whatever signal already exists, support themes, sales anecdotes, analytics, prior research, rather than weeks of dedicated study, and it's meant to evolve rather than stay stable. The output structures those assumptions explicitly, so a team can align on who it's building for quickly while still seeing exactly which parts are a guess that still needs checking.
6 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 1b5a524. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are markdown).
From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:
github.comFrom URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Proto-Persona Builder loads about 3.3k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 42 tokens; SKILL.md has 1,328 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 1,328 words (~3,279 tokens).
“Create an initial, assumption-based persona profile that synthesizes available user research, market data, and stakeholder knowledge into a working hypothesis about your target user. Use this to align teams early in product development, guide initial design decisions, and identify gaps…”

Synthesizes existing research, market signals, and team knowledge into a working persona hypothesis, flagged for later validation.
Proto-Persona Builder fits situations like: needing a working customer profile before deeper research is done; aligning a team early on who a feature is for; making design-by-committee assumptions explicit so they can be validated.
Run `npx skills add deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills --skill proto-persona -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/proto-persona in deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills) into .claude/skills/proto-persona in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills --skill proto-persona -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (skills/proto-persona in deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills) into .agents/skills/proto-persona in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills --skill proto-persona -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/proto-persona, .gemini/skills/proto-persona, .github/skills/proto-persona and .opencode/skills/proto-persona in your project.
SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Proto-Persona Builder is instructions for the agent only.
SKILL.md names 1 domain. In commands or code: github.com; the agent is likely to contact it when it follows the instructions. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Proto-Persona Builder has a licence file (the repository's licence) that doesn't match a standard licence. Read it on GitHub before reusing the skill.
About 3.3k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 13k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
