opportunity-solution-treeBuilds an Opportunity Solution Tree from a stakeholder request: a measurable outcome, customer-problem opportunities, candidate solutions, tests and a proof-of-concept pick.
This skill guides product managers through Teresa Torres's Opportunity Solution Tree, which links a desired outcome to opportunities (customer problems or needs), solutions for each opportunity and experiments to test them. It starts from a stakeholder request or a target outcome, extracts a measurable outcome, generates several opportunity options and maps possible solutions before choosing a proof of concept on feasibility, impact and market fit.
The purpose is to turn a vague ask into structured discovery and to avoid feature-factory thinking and early commitment to one idea. It is not a roadmap generator, and opportunities must be problems rather than features in disguise. You can arrive with only a request, or add customer evidence, constraints and solutions already being pushed; anything given at invocation counts as an answer, so it is not asked again. A template and a sample file are included.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 1b5a524. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

Opportunity Solution Tree Builder loads about 4.5k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 50 tokens; SKILL.md has 1,821 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 1,821 words (~4,495 tokens).
“Guide product managers through creating an Opportunity Solution Tree (OST) by extracting target outcomes from stakeholder requests, generating opportunity options (problems to solve), mapping potential solutions, and selecting the best proof-of-concept (POC) based on feasibility, impact, and market fit. Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills --skill opportunity-solution-tree -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/opportunity-solution-tree, .gemini/skills/opportunity-solution-tree, .github/skills/opportunity-solution-tree and .opencode/skills/opportunity-solution-tree in your project.
SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Opportunity Solution Tree Builder is instructions for the agent only.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Opportunity Solution Tree Builder has a licence file (the repository's licence) that doesn't match a standard licence. Read it on GitHub before reusing the skill.
About 4.5k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 18k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
