What it does

Save Insight is an agent skill from davekilleen/Dex. Capture a reusable learning from completed work so future similar work is easier. Use when the user says 'save this learning', 'capture this insight', or finishes something tricky. Also use proactively after non-routine work. Not for recording a decision and its rationale; use decision-log.

Its SKILL.md is about 750 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Development, covering Architecture decision records. The repository describes itself as: Your AI Chief of Staff — a personal operating system starter kit that adapts to your role. No coding required. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • The user says save this learning
  • Capture this insight
  • Finishes something tricky

Example prompts

  • “save this learning”
  • “capture this insight”
  • “/save-insight”

Workflow steps

4 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Reflection Questions
  2. Create or Update Learning Note
  3. Learning Entry Format
  4. Cross-Link (Optional)

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 227f78e. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are markdown).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Save Insight loads about 753 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 77 tokens; SKILL.md has 297 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~77
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~753

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

<!-- Generated from `.claude/skills/save-insight/SKILL.md` by `scripts/generate-agents-skills.py`. Do not edit. -->

Capture what you learned from completing work. This is the "compound" step—making future similar work easier.

Arguments

$WORK_COMPLETED: What did you just complete? (project milestone, tricky problem, meeting, workflow improvement, etc.)

Process

1. Reflection Questions

Ask the user (or extract from recent work context):

  1. What was the situation?

    • Original goal or challenge
    • Why it was harder than expected (if applicable)
  2. What approach worked?

    • Strategy or tactic used
    • Key decisions made
  3. What would you do differently?

    • Gotchas encountered
    • Better approaches discovered late
  4. What's reusable?

    • Patterns that apply elsewhere
    • Mental models that help
2. Create or Update Learning Note

Store in: 06-Resources/Learnings/[Category]_Learnings.md

Categories:

  • Working_Preferences - How you like to work, communication style, tool preferences
  • Mistake_Patterns - Common errors to avoid, with triggers and corrections

Create new category files as needed for domain-specific learnings.

3. Learning Entry Format

Append to the appropriate file:

markdown
---

## [Short Title] — [Date]

**Context:** [1 sentence on what you were doing]

**Challenge:** [What was tricky or non-obvious]

**What Worked:**
[The approach that succeeded]

**Key Insight:**
> [The memorable takeaway—something you'd tell past-you]

**See Also:** [Related notes if any]

If the learning relates to:

  • A person → Add to their person page
  • A project → Add link in project's note
  • A recurring workflow → Update relevant template

Output

  1. Ask reflection questions (or extract from context)
  2. Create/update the appropriate learning file
  3. Suggest any cross-links
  4. Confirm saved

Philosophy

"The palest ink is better than the best memory." — Chinese proverb

This isn't documentation for others—it's a gift to future-you. Be specific. Include the gotcha. Make it searchable.

Track Usage (Silent)

Call the mark_feature_used tool on the dex-analytics MCP server with save-insight. This ticks the feature's box in System/usage_log.md, which is what /dex-level-up reads to recommend features that have not been tried. It writes locally and sends nothing, so it runs whether or not analytics is enabled.

Analytics (Silent):

Call track_event with event_name insight_saved and properties:

  • category

This only fires if the user has opted into analytics. No action needed if it returns "analytics_disabled".
