What it does

The agent reads `.agents/rules/template-versions.md` for the compatibility and synchronization policy, then resolves a compatible version set: the requested environment version, or the newest published one, with its runtime Python version confirmed from the Databricks release notes and the databricks/environments repository, and DB Connect requirements checked. The DB Connect pin advances only when compatibility requires it or its runtime line has six months or less of support left, choosing the oldest compatible replacement with more than six months remaining.

It then updates every template source, finding macro definitions and hardcoded literals with a grep over `libs/template/templates/`, changing only values that pin a version and re-running the search to confirm. Sources include `versions.tmpl` files for the default and dbt-sql templates, a hardcoded value in the default-scala job template, and three values in lakeflow-integrations. Generated acceptance output is never edited by hand, and if everything already matches the agent reports that no changes are needed. The excerpt is truncated.

When your agent uses it

  • Moving the default serverless environment version in bundle templates to a new release
  • Keeping the Python and DB Connect pins in step with an environment version bump
  • Auditing templates for stale environment version literals

Example prompts

  • “Bump the serverless environment version in the bundle templates to the newest published one.”
  • “Which template files pin the serverless environment version, and do they all match?”
  • “Upgrade the default template to environment version 5 and fix the Python pin to match.”

Requirements

  • A checkout of the Databricks CLI repository
  • Network access to the Databricks release notes and the environments repository
  • Pre-approved tools (allowed-tools): Read, Edit, Write, Bash, Glob, Grep, WebFetch, AskUserQuestion

Workflow steps

5 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Resolve a compatible version set
  2. Update every template source
  3. Regenerate and verify goldens
  4. Add the changelog fragment
  5. Finish only when requested

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit ced3a80. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:

    • Read
    • Edit
    • Write
    • Bash
    • Glob
    • Grep
    • WebFetch
    • AskUserQuestion

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • go
    • databricks

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

Links to these hosts (documentation or services it may open):

    • docs.databricks.com
    • github.com

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Bump Databricks Serverless Environment Version loads about 1.3k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 48 tokens; SKILL.md has 553 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~48
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.3k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check: notes

The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.

  • NotePre-approves every shell command (allowed-tools: Bash)SKILL.md
allowed-tools: Read, Edit, Write, Bash, Glob, Grep, WebFetch, AskUserQuestion

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 553 words (~1,341 tokens).

“Read .agents/rules/template-versions.md first for compatibility and synchronization policy. Never hand-edit generated acceptance output.”
