What it does

The American Historical Review is an agent skill from brycewang-stanford/Awesome-Journal-Skills. Use when targeting The American Historical Review (AHR) or deciding whether a history manuscript fits this venue. Encodes the journal's fit, the broad-significance argument bar, primary-source and historiographical expectations, Chicago house style and double-blind norms, official-submission re-check, and desk-reject heuristics.

Its SKILL.md is about 1.6k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

The repository describes itself as: Journal-specific Claude Code/Codex skill packs covering mainstream journals — AER, QJE, Nature, Cell, 管理世界, 经济研究 & 200+ more — your fast track to getting published. | 覆盖主流期刊的… The licence is MIT.

Context cost

The American Historical Review loads about 1.6k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 90 tokens; SKILL.md has 706 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

The American Historical Review (the-american-historical-review)

Journal positioning

The American Historical Review (AHR) is the flagship journal of the American Historical Association and a generalist venue for the whole discipline of history, publishing original research of significance across all fields, periods, and world regions. Its defining expectation is an argument whose interest reaches beyond the specialist subfield — a contribution that historians of other periods and places will find consequential — grounded in deep primary research and an explicit historiographical intervention. A meticulous but narrowly specialist study with no broader stake is a poor fit, however sound. This skill is a fit / venue-selection / re-framing aid. It does not replace the journal's current submission guidelines. Before submitting, re-check the live AHR author instructions and style guide.

When to trigger

  • The author names AHR for a history manuscript and wants a fit/framing check.
  • A deeply researched but specialist study must be re-framed to show its discipline-wide significance and historiographical stake.
  • The author is choosing between AHR and a period/area-specialist history journal.
  • The author needs AHR's argument-significance bar and desk-reject heuristics.

Scope & topic fit

  • Original historical arguments in any field, period, or region, when the stake is legible to non-specialists.
  • Work that reframes a historiographical debate or opens a new line of inquiry, not merely adding a case to a settled one.
  • Transnational, comparative, and methodologically innovative history (including the history of ideas, the body, the environment, capitalism, empire, and the digital).
  • Studies that put a rich archive to conceptual work, rather than reporting findings for their own sake.

Method & evidence bar

  • The contribution is an original, clearly stated argument with significance beyond the subfield; "we know more about X" is not enough — name the intervention.
  • Primary-source command must be deep and appropriate to the field; archival, textual, or material evidence is read critically, not merely cited.
  • The historiographical positioning is explicit: what conversation the piece enters and how it changes it.
  • Interpretation is controlled by evidence; claims are proportionate to the sources and alert to their silences and biases.
  • Engagement with relevant scholarship across (not only within) the subfield demonstrates the broader stake.

Structure & house style

  • Long-form scholarly article with a sustained argument; re-check current word limits and article types (articles, AHR's distinctive features) on the live guide.
  • Chicago notes-and-bibliography style with full footnotes; archival citations follow the journal's form.
  • Double-blind review: anonymize the manuscript (remove self-identifying citations and acknowledgements) per current policy.
  • Prose is argument-driven and accessible to historians outside the subfield; foreign- language sources are quoted and translated per policy.
  • Images and figures, where used, require reproduction permissions and meet the journal's specifications.

Official-submission checklist

  • Before giving submission-ready advice, read ../../resources/source-basis.md and ../../resources/official-source-map.md; start from the AHA / OUP anchors, then cite the current AHR page you checked.
  • Search the live site for "American Historical Review submission guidelines" and follow the current version.
  • Re-check article types and word limits, the Chicago citation/footnote form, and the abstract requirement.
  • Confirm anonymization requirements for double-blind review.
  • Re-check image/illustration permissions and specifications, and any translation/transliteration policy for non-English sources.
  • Re-check competing-interest, funding (if applicable), and AI-use disclosure, and any open-access terms.
  • If the live official instructions conflict with this skill, the official instructions win.

Pre-submission self-check

  • The argument's significance is legible to historians outside the subfield, not only to specialists.
  • The historiographical intervention is named explicitly — what debate it enters and how it changes it.
  • Primary sources are read critically and the evidence supports the claims, including their limits.
  • The manuscript is anonymized for double-blind review per current policy.
  • Chicago footnotes/citations and any required abstract follow the current style guide.
  • Image permissions and translations of non-English sources are handled.

Common desk-reject triggers

  • A sound but narrowly specialist study with no significance beyond the subfield.
  • An argument that adds a case to a settled debate without reframing it.
  • Thin or uncritical use of primary sources, or claims out of proportion to the evidence.
  • No explicit historiographical positioning ("the literature says… and so do I").
  • Wrong venue: a piece pitched to one area community that a specialist journal would serve better.

Re-routing decision

  • Society/economy/culture history with a problem-driven argument → past-and-present.
  • Modern European or transnational focus → the-journal-of-modern-history.
  • British, medieval, or early-modern archival study → the-english-historical-review.
  • Early-American / Atlantic-world history → the-william-and-mary-quarterly.
  • Argument about historical method or epistemology → history-and-theory.
