What it does

Pyzotero is an agent skill from agent-skills-hub/agent-skills-hub. Interact with Zotero reference management libraries using the pyzotero Python client. Retrieve, create, update, and delete items, collections, tags, and attachments via the Zotero Web API v3. Use this skill when working with Zotero libraries programmatically, managing bibliographic references, exporting citations, searching library contents, uploading PDF attachments, or building research automation workflows that integrate with Zotero.

Its SKILL.md is about 1.1k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 14 other files, including reference files (for example `references/authentication.md`, `references/cli.md` and `references/collections.md`).

It sits in Research & Science, covering Citation management and Workflow automation. It works with Zotero and Python. The repository describes itself as: Agent Skills Hub is a global library of AI agent skills that work across OpenClaw, Claude Code, Gemini, Cursor, Antigravity, and more. The licence is MIT.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit efc0b96. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

    Pre-approves these tools, so the agent can use them without asking each time:

    • Read
    • Write
    • Edit
    • Bash

    From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • uv

    From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    Links to these hosts (documentation or services it may open):

    • zotero.org

    From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

    Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:

    • ZOTERO_API_KEY

    From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Pyzotero loads about 1.1k tokens when it runs, and up to ~9.2k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 112 tokens; SKILL.md has 235 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~112
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.1k
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~9.2k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Pyzotero

Pyzotero is a Python wrapper for the Zotero API v3. Use it to programmatically manage Zotero libraries: read items and collections, create and update references, upload attachments, manage tags, and export citations.

Authentication Setup

Required credentials — get from https://www.zotero.org/settings/keys:

Store credentials in environment variables or a .env file:

ZOTERO_LIBRARY_ID=your_user_id
ZOTERO_API_KEY=your_api_key
ZOTERO_LIBRARY_TYPE=user  # or "group"

See references/authentication.md for full setup details.

Installation

bash
uv add pyzotero
# or with CLI support:
uv add "pyzotero[cli]"

Quick Start

python
from pyzotero import Zotero

zot = Zotero(library_id='123456', library_type='user', api_key='ABC1234XYZ')

# Retrieve top-level items (returns 100 by default)
items = zot.top(limit=10)
for item in items:
    print(item['data']['title'], item['data']['itemType'])

# Search by keyword
results = zot.items(q='machine learning', limit=20)

# Retrieve all items (use everything() for complete results)
all_items = zot.everything(zot.items())

Core Concepts

  • A Zotero instance is bound to a single library (user or group). All methods operate on that library.
  • Item data lives in item['data']. Access fields like item['data']['title'], item['data']['creators'].
  • Pyzotero returns 100 items by default (API default is 25). Use zot.everything(zot.items()) to get all items.
  • Write methods return True on success or raise a ZoteroError.

Common Patterns

Fetch and modify an item
python
item = zot.item('ITEMKEY')
item['data']['title'] = 'New Title'
zot.update_item(item)
Create an item from a template
python
template = zot.item_template('journalArticle')
template['title'] = 'My Paper'
template['creators'][0] = {'creatorType': 'author', 'firstName': 'Jane', 'lastName': 'Doe'}
zot.create_items([template])
Export as BibTeX
python
zot.add_parameters(format='bibtex')
bibtex = zot.top(limit=50)
# bibtex is a bibtexparser BibDatabase object
print(bibtex.entries)
Local mode (read-only, no API key needed)
python
zot = Zotero(library_id='123456', library_type='user', local=True)
items = zot.items()

What does Pyzotero need to run?

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Pyzotero needs the command-line tools its instructions call (uv) and credentials named ZOTERO_API_KEY. Our summary lists: Python 3; A credential in ZOTERO_API_KEY. Its frontmatter pre-approves these tools: Read, Write, Edit, Bash.

Does Pyzotero access the network?

SKILL.md names 1 domain. As links in the text: zotero.org. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.

Is Pyzotero safe to install?

Our automated static check of SKILL.md found notes only (mentions a .env file; pre-approves every shell command (allowed-tools: bash)), nothing it rates as a warning. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.

What licence does Pyzotero use?

Pyzotero is published under the MIT licence (declared in SKILL.md). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.

How many tokens does Pyzotero use?

About 1.1k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 4.4k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 8.1k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.

What are the alternatives to Pyzotero?

Skills that share tags, products or a category with Pyzotero: NSFC Literature Review Writer (HuiyuLi-2000/Chinese-Grant-Writer-Skills, 439 stars), Zotero (congcongwang0122/zotero-skill, 200 stars), Ref Downloader (ltczding-gif/ref-downloader, 139 stars) and CLI Anything Zotero (PiaoyangGuohai1/cli-anything-zotero, 138 stars).
