Best Obsidian Skills for Claude Code: Notes, Vaults and Canvas

Compare the best Claude skill for Obsidian notes, Bases, JSON Canvas and vault control: what each reads and writes, requirements, licence and trade-offs.

By Updated 6 min read

A vault is a folder of Markdown files, which is why a Claude skill for Obsidian can do a lot without special software: it teaches the agent the syntax and file formats Obsidian expects. The strongest set in the directory is the obsidian-skills repository from kepano, which covers notes, Bases, Canvas and the command line. Larger vault systems and daily-note workflows build on top of it.

This guide sorts Obsidian-related skills by what they touch, so you can pick the smallest one that does the job. Each entry gives what it reads and writes, requirements, licence as the directory records it, and a trade-off. Descriptions come from each skill's SKILL.md and repository. The editorial team did not run them against a real vault, so nothing here is a claim about output quality. For a wider list, see the note-taking topic.

Skills for writing notes and file formats

kepano/obsidian-markdown

Best for: getting valid wikilinks, embeds, callouts and properties on the first try.

kepano/obsidian-markdown is MIT-licensed and covers only what Obsidian adds to Markdown, which keeps it to about 1,300 tokens. It lives in the kepano/obsidian-skills repository, which follows the Agent Skills format. The README says to add the repository contents to a .claude folder at your vault root for Claude Code, or copy the skills/ folder to ~/.codex/skills for Codex.

Requirements: none to write notes. Open Obsidian to preview how they render.

Trade-off: it teaches syntax, not organization. It will not decide your folder structure or tag scheme.

kepano/obsidian-bases

Best for: turning notes into table, card, list or map views.

kepano/obsidian-bases creates and edits Bases files, which are database-style views over your notes with filters and formulas. At around 3,300 tokens it is the heaviest of the family, but you only pay for it when you work on a base.

Requirements: Obsidian, to view the result. Trade-off: it is useful only if you already use or plan to use Bases.

kepano/json-canvas

Best for: generating mind maps, flowcharts and boards as .canvas files.

kepano/json-canvas creates and edits JSON Canvas files with nodes, edges and groups. The format is open, so the files are not locked to one app. The skill needs no software to write them, and it loads about 1,900 tokens.

Trade-off: layout is coordinates in a text file. Expect to nudge boxes by hand after the agent generates a large board.

Copies of these three skills

The Markdown, Bases and Canvas skills each appear in six or seven other repositories, including community collections and plugin bundles, with the same names. When several repositories copy one skill, install from the original so you get the author's updates. Use a copy only if you want its bundle for other reasons.

Skills that control a running vault

kepano/obsidian-cli and steipete/obsidian

Best for: letting the agent search, read, create and edit notes through Obsidian itself.

kepano/obsidian-cli drives a running vault through the obsidian command: it reads, creates, appends to and searches notes, and manages tasks, properties, tags and backlinks. It also has a plugin-development section covering reloads, error checks, screenshots and console output. It needs Obsidian open and the command available.

steipete/obsidian is a shorter MIT-licensed skill with the same idea: search, read, write, backlinks, Bases and Canvas through the Obsidian CLI. Its safety rules are worth copying. It says to avoid bulk vault rewrites, never edit the .obsidian folder unless asked, preserve frontmatter and wikilinks, confirm which vault to use and delete only on request. The file assumes the CLI is enabled in settings and that you restart the app afterward.

Trade-off: both depend on the CLI, so they stop working when Obsidian is closed. pablo-mano/obsidian-cli is a third option with specific notes for Obsidian Desktop 1.12.0 or newer. On Windows it expects the Obsidian.com helper next to Obsidian.exe and a terminal that is not running as administrator. The directory records no licence for it.

Whole-vault systems

agricidaniel/claude-obsidian skills

Best for: building a knowledge base where the agent ingests sources into linked, cited pages.

The AgriciDaniel/claude-obsidian repository is MIT-licensed and, per its README, ships 15 coordinated skills: core wiki operations, workflow extensions for web research, canvas, content cleaning and rollups, and reference skills. agricidaniel/wiki sets up a separate vault or adopts an existing one through a Python script, and the README says changes need your explicit approval. agricidaniel/canvas-2 edits Canvas boards with recoverable changes, and agricidaniel/obsidian-bases validates Bases files and applies edits in one inspected transaction.

Requirements: Python 3.11 or newer. Obsidian is optional for visual features. The README says native Windows needs WSL for vault writes.

Trade-off: this is a system with its own conventions, not a drop-in syntax helper. Adopt it for a new vault, and read the adopt workflow before pointing it at an old one.

Smaller vault workflows

galaxy-dawn/obsidian-project-kb-core maintains a project-scoped research vault with hub, plan and index notes. jason-effi-lab/ingest compiles raw articles and transcripts from an inbox folder into linked pages and archives the originals, and the directory records no licence for it. michael-ovo/obsidian-knowledge turns PDFs, slides and papers into structured notes. vexa-ai/vexa-meetings writes meeting notes into Obsidian, Notion or Markdown, and it is licensed Apache-2.0.

Daily notes, goals and web clippings

ballred/daily is MIT-licensed and part of a PKM vault template. It creates today's daily note and guides morning, midday and evening routines, and it expects a daily note template and a Daily Notes/ folder. The same author's ballred/goal-tracking tracks yearly, monthly and weekly goals in linked Markdown files.

Two more kepano skills help with inputs. kepano/defuddle uses the Defuddle command line to turn web pages into clean Markdown, which saves tokens, and needs a global npm install and network access. kepano/knap renders Markdown notes from templates and JSON data, and needs Node.js 20 or newer.

Safety habits for any skill that writes to your vault

Treat the vault like source code. Put it in Git or take a backup before the first session. Ask the agent to work in a scratch folder at first, and read the diff before syncing. Skills that fetch web pages bring in untrusted text, so avoid letting an agent follow instructions it finds in a clipped article. Open each skill's page in the directory to see its automated check result before you install it.

Which Obsidian skill should you pick?

Start with kepano's Markdown skill, since it is small and fixes the most common mistake, wrong syntax. Add the Bases or Canvas skill when you use those features. Add a CLI skill if you want the agent to work with the open app. Move to the claude-obsidian system only when you want a managed wiki.

Installation steps differ by agent, so use the pages for Claude Code and Codex. If you clip research from the web, the web scraping and search skills comparison covers the fetching side, and the top skills list shows what else is widely used.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Obsidian running to use an Obsidian skill?

Only for some. Skills that write Markdown, Bases or Canvas files work on plain files and do not need the app open. Skills built on the Obsidian command line need the desktop app running with its command-line interface enabled. Each skill's requirements line says which kind it is.

Which skill teaches Claude to write valid Obsidian notes?

The Obsidian Flavored Markdown skill from the kepano obsidian-skills repository. It covers wikilinks, embeds, callouts and frontmatter properties, and it leaves out ordinary Markdown the agent already knows. It is MIT-licensed and passed the directory's automated check.

What is JSON Canvas?

JSON Canvas is an open file format for infinite-canvas boards, saved as .canvas files with nodes, edges and groups. Obsidian reads and writes it, and a skill can teach an agent to create valid boards, mind maps and flowcharts without opening the app.

Is it safe to let an agent edit my vault?

Keep a backup or put the vault under version control first. The better skills limit changes to targeted files, preserve frontmatter and links, and avoid touching the .obsidian settings folder unless you ask. Even so, review changes before you sync them, because a bulk rewrite is hard to undo.

Are the kepano skills copied elsewhere?

Yes. The Markdown, Bases and Canvas skills appear in several community collections, usually unchanged. This guide links the original repository because it is the version the author updates.
