aster-selfAster's own files and settings, where config, keys, skills, sessions, and memory live and the command that changes each.
Aster Self is an agent skill from Zfinix/aster. Aster's own files and settings, where config, keys, skills, sessions, and memory live and the command that changes each. Use for any question about Aster itself.
Its SKILL.md is about 850 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.
It sits in Agent Workflows. It works with Model Context Protocol. The repository describes itself as: An open-source agent harness for software work. The licence is Apache-2.0.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 3fbb67c. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.
From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Aster Self loads about 851 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 43 tokens; SKILL.md has 398 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check noted patterns worth knowing about, such as sudo or a known installer.
| API keys | `~/.aster/.env` | `.env` |er key unset VAR`. These write `~/.aster/.env` by default; `--local`writes the repo `.env`. There is no `--global` flag on `aster key`.Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from Zfinix/aster at commit 3fbb67c, republished under its Apache-2.0 licence (© Zfinix). 398 words, ~851 tokens.
.claude/skills/aster-self/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder).You are Aster. Answer questions about your own files and settings from this map;
do not search the disk for them. When the answer depends on the current
directory, confirm with one command (aster config path, aster key path,
aster status) and quote what it prints. aster <command> --help is the source
of truth for flags.
~ is the home directory (%USERPROFILE% on Windows). The data root is
$XDG_DATA_HOME/aster when that is set, otherwise ~/.local/share/aster.

A project file wins over the global one. For settings the order is CLI flags,
then shell env, then the project aster.yaml, then the global one, then
defaults. A project skill shadows a global skill of the same name. API keys are
never read from aster.yaml.
Prefer these commands over hand-editing: they check the file still parses.
aster config list shows every key, its value, and where it came
from. aster config set KEY VALUE --global|--local, aster config unset KEY,
aster config edit --global|--local. Plain aster config opens a form.aster model and aster provider list and switch them.
The default model for every repo is
aster config set review.model <id> --global (the key is review.model, not
model).aster key list, aster key set VAR (prompts without echo),
aster key unset VAR. These write ~/.aster/.env by default; --local
writes the repo .env. There is no --global flag on aster key.aster skills add <owner/repo|path|agent> [-p], aster skills list,
aster skills remove NAME, aster skills init NAME. A new skill can also be
written straight to the skills folder above; it loads next session.aster plugins add|list|remove.aster mcp add|list|enable|disable|remove|login, aster mcp import to
copy servers from another coding tool.aster remember "fact", aster memory list|add|remove|show.AGENTS.md for the scope you want.aster upgrade.A change to config, skills, plugins, or MCP takes effect in the next session.
After editing a config file by hand, run aster config list to confirm it
still parses.

Aster Self fits situations like: any question about Aster itself.
Run `npx skills add Zfinix/aster --skill aster-self -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (crates/aster-skills/builtins/aster-self in Zfinix/aster) into .claude/skills/aster-self in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add Zfinix/aster --skill aster-self -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (crates/aster-skills/builtins/aster-self in Zfinix/aster) into .agents/skills/aster-self in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add Zfinix/aster --skill aster-self -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/aster-self, .gemini/skills/aster-self, .github/skills/aster-self and .opencode/skills/aster-self in your project.
SKILL.md names no scripts, command-line tools or credentials: Aster Self is instructions for the agent only.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found notes only (mentions a .env file), nothing it rates as a warning. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Aster Self is published under the Apache-2.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 851 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 3.4k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
Skills that share tags, products or a category with Aster Self: MCP Server Builder (anthropics/skills, 180k stars), MCP Server Builder (shareAI-lab/learn-claude-code, 78k stars), MCP Integration for Plugins (anthropics/claude-plugins-official, 38k stars) and Fastmcp Client CLI (PrefectHQ/fastmcp, 28k stars). The comparison table on this page puts their stars, adoption, token cost, safety result and licence side by side.
