crush-configExplains how to configure the Crush coding agent with crushrc or crush.json, covering providers, models, LSPs, MCP servers, hooks, permissions and config precedence.
Crush reads two config formats, and this skill recommends crushrc, a Bash script run at load time that builds the configuration by calling builtins such as provider, model, mcp, lsp, hook, permissions and option. Because it is real Bash, includes, secrets, conditionals and variables work naturally, and a failing command substitution aborts the load. A crush.json file remains fully supported.
Both formats are discovered together and deep-merged. Project-local files, where the one closest to the working directory wins, take priority over the user config under the XDG config folder or ~/.config/crush. If one directory holds both, they merge with crushrc winning and Crush logs a warning, and the data directories hold machine-owned JSON state only.
Commands are verb-first, with remove accepting rm, and booleans accept true, false, 1, 0, yes or no. Provider setup takes flags such as name, type, API key and base URL, with types including openai, openai-compat, anthropic and local ones like ollama, lmstudio and llamacpp. CRUSH_VERSION is exported into the script so you can feature-detect the running version.
2 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 8b18242. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Shell commands in SKILL.md call:
shFrom the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:
api.deepseek.comapi.githubcopilot.comcharm.landFrom URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:
DEEPSEEK_API_KEYANTHROPIC_API_KEYFrom names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Crush Configuration loads about 3.7k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 56 tokens; SKILL.md has 1,182 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 1,182 words (~3,688 tokens).

Run `npx skills add charmbracelet/crush --skill crush-config -a claude-code`. Or copy the skill folder (internal/skills/builtin/crush-config in charmbracelet/crush) into .claude/skills/crush-config in your project. Claude Code loads it when a task matches its description.
Run `npx skills add charmbracelet/crush --skill crush-config -a codex`. Or copy the skill folder (internal/skills/builtin/crush-config in charmbracelet/crush) into .agents/skills/crush-config in your project. Codex loads it when a task matches its description.
Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add charmbracelet/crush --skill crush-config -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/crush-config, .gemini/skills/crush-config, .github/skills/crush-config and .opencode/skills/crush-config in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Crush Configuration needs the command-line tools its instructions call (sh) and credentials named DEEPSEEK_API_KEY and ANTHROPIC_API_KEY. Our summary lists: The Crush CLI.
SKILL.md names 3 domains. In commands or code: api.deepseek.com, api.githubcopilot.com and charm.land; the agent is likely to contact these when it follows the instructions. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Crush Configuration has a licence file (the repository's licence) that doesn't match a standard licence. Read it on GitHub before reusing the skill.
About 3.7k tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 15k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
