At a glance

Fetches timestamped captions or plain-text transcripts for any YouTube video through the TranscriptAPI service, for reading, quoting, translating or accessibility.

  • Reading or quoting what is said in a YouTube video
  • SKILL.md covers Setup, Required Headers, GET /api/v2/youtube/transcript and Tips, plus 2 more sections
  • Reaches transcriptapi.com; needs TRANSCRIPT_API_KEY
  • Getting timestamped captions for accessibility or timing checks

What it does

This skill calls the TranscriptAPI.com endpoint /api/v2/youtube/transcript with a video URL or ID and returns the captions. The format parameter chooses structured JSON with start times and durations, or plain text, and timestamps and video metadata can be switched on or off. JSON suits accessibility tools and timing analysis, while plain text without timestamps reads more cleanly.

Each request needs a bearer API key from the TRANSCRIPT_API_KEY variable, with a reference file explaining how to get and store one, and a User-Agent header naming your agent, because a bare default is blocked by Cloudflare with a 403. A table of error codes covers a bad key, missing credits and videos without captions. Auto-generated captions exist for most videos, and manual ones are higher quality. It does not upload subtitles or manage accounts.

When your agent uses it

  • Reading or quoting what is said in a YouTube video
  • Getting timestamped captions for accessibility or timing checks
  • Translating a video's spoken text or using it for language learning
  • Reviewing video content from a pasted link or video ID

Example prompts

  • “Get the captions for this YouTube video and summarize the main points.”
  • “Pull the timestamped transcript of this talk so I can quote the part about pricing.”
  • “Fetch the plain-text captions for this video ID and translate them into Spanish.”

Requirements

  • A TranscriptAPI key in the TRANSCRIPT_API_KEY variable
  • Internet access to transcriptapi.com
  • Credits on the TranscriptAPI account
  • Compatibility (from SKILL.md): Requires internet access to reach transcriptapi.com. No additional runtimes or dependencies needed.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 4f7994b. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

    Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

    From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are json and http).

    From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    Hosts in commands or code, which the agent is likely to contact:

    • transcriptapi.com

    From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

    Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:

    • TRANSCRIPT_API_KEY

    From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

  • Compatibility

    Requires internet access to reach transcriptapi.com. No additional runtimes or dependencies needed.

    From compatibility in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

Context cost

YouTube Captions Fetcher loads about 1.1k tokens when it runs, and up to ~3k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 96 tokens; SKILL.md has 215 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~96
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.1k
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~3k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Setup

If $TRANSCRIPT_API_KEY is not set, read references/auth-setup.md and follow the instructions there to get and store the key.

Required Headers

Every request needs two headers:

  • Authorization: Bearer $TRANSCRIPT_API_KEY
  • User-Agent: your agent's name and version if known (e.g. HermesAgent/0.11.0, ClaudeCode/1.0). Version is optional — agent name alone is fine. Do not omit this header or send a bare default — Cloudflare will return a 403 (error code 1010) and block the request.

GET /api/v2/youtube/transcript

http
GET https://transcriptapi.com/api/v2/youtube/transcript?video_url=VIDEO_URL&format=json&include_timestamp=true&send_metadata=true
Authorization: Bearer $TRANSCRIPT_API_KEY
User-Agent: YourAgent/1.0
ParamRequiredDefaultValues
video_urlyes—YouTube URL or video ID
formatnojsonjson (structured), text (plain)
include_timestampnotruetrue, false
send_metadatanofalsetrue, false

Response (format=json — best for accessibility/timing):

json
{
  "video_id": "dQw4w9WgXcQ",
  "language": "en",
  "transcript": [
    { "text": "We're no strangers to love", "start": 18.0, "duration": 3.5 },
    { "text": "You know the rules and so do I", "start": 21.5, "duration": 2.8 }
  ],
  "metadata": { "title": "...", "author_name": "...", "thumbnail_url": "..." }
}
  • start: seconds from video start
  • duration: how long caption is displayed

Response (format=text — readable):

json
{
  "video_id": "dQw4w9WgXcQ",
  "language": "en",
  "transcript": "[00:00:18] We're no strangers to love\n[00:00:21] You know the rules..."
}

Tips

  • Use format=json for sync'd captions (accessibility tools, timing analysis).
  • Use format=text with include_timestamp=false for clean reading.
  • Auto-generated captions are available for most videos; manual CC is higher quality.
