At a glance

Runs read-only lookups - list, describe, get - against a live YugabyteDB Anywhere control plane using the yba CLI, with mutating commands explicitly off-limits.

  • Works in 3 steps: Get the yba binary → Point it at the right host + credentials → Run the query
  • Checking what universes or tasks exist on a live YBA instance
  • SKILL.md covers Step 1: Get the yba binary, Step 2: Point it at the right…, Step 3: Run the query and Notes
  • Calls go

What it does

This skill is scoped strictly to read-only questions about a running YugabyteDB Anywhere instance - what universes exist, whether a task is running on a specific universe, what a provider's configuration looks like - never to changing anything. Its guardrail is explicit: only list, describe, get, the read-only tree command, and help are allowed; create, edit, delete, pause, resume, restart, upgrade, abort, retry and similar mutating verbs are treated as a separate, explicit request the user must make directly with its own confirmation.

It first checks whether the yba binary is already on the path and, if not, builds it from source with a plain Go build rather than running the full release pipeline, since that's enough for querying. Connecting needs a host and an API token, resolved in order from command-line flags, then environment variables, then a saved config file.

If a working config already exists it reuses it rather than re-authenticating, and otherwise it asks the user for the host and a token generated from the product's own UI, preferring per-invocation flags or session environment variables over a persistent auth command that could silently overwrite a config for a different YBA instance. It also explicitly avoids a password-based login flow for this read-only use case, since that command leaks the password into shell history and process listings and persists it to the config file - an API token is the right credential here instead.

When your agent uses it

  • Checking what universes or tasks exist on a live YBA instance
  • Looking up a provider's or alert's current configuration in YBA
  • Inspecting YBA state without risking any mutating change

Example prompts

  • “What universes exist on this YBA instance right now?”
  • “Is there a task currently running on universe prod-east?”
  • “Describe this provider's storage configuration in YBA.”

Requirements

  • The yba CLI (built from managed/yba-cli or on PATH)
  • A YBA host and API token

Workflow steps

3 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.

  1. Get the yba binary
  2. Point it at the right host + credentials
  3. Run the query

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit cdf582d. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • go

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

YBA Read-Only Query CLI loads about 1.1k tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 118 tokens; SKILL.md has 508 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~118
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1.1k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

SKILL.md

Its licence (Custom licence) doesn't allow us to republish the file, so here is its outline and opening line. It has 508 words (~1,094 tokens).

“This skill is for read-only lookups against a live YugabyteDB Anywhere instance via the yba CLI, whose source lives at managed/yba-cli in this repo. It answers questions like "what universes exist on this YBA?", "is there a task running on…”
