What it does

Mail Time is an agent skill from veliovgroup/mail-time. Use when building, wiring, reviewing, or debugging MailTime and ostrio:mailer email queues for horizontally scaled Node.js, Bun, or Meteor apps. Trigger on MailTime, MongoQueue, RedisQueue, PostgresQueue, mailTimePreset, JoSk email scheduling, Redis Cluster / KeyDB Cluster / Valkey useHashTags, KeyDB active-replication, scheduled mail, retries, sendAt, concatEmails, multi-SMTP backup or balancer, client/server mail workers, dedicated mail hosts, graceful shutdown, pause/resume, custom queue adapters, duplicate…

Its SKILL.md is about 1k tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. The skill folder holds 6 other files, including reference files (for example `references/adapters.md`, `references/api.md` and `references/legacy-v3.md`).

It sits in Databases, covering Transactional email, Container orchestration and Database administration. It works with Node.js, Redis, Kubernetes and SendGrid. The repository describes itself as: 📮 Email queue extending NodeMailer with multi SMTP transports and horizontally scaled applications support. The licence is BSD-3-Clause.

Requirements

  • Node.js

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit e5d60de. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

    Shell commands in SKILL.md call:

    • npx

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

No URLs in SKILL.md. Its commands use npx, which can reach the network depending on how they are called.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Mail Time loads about 1k tokens when it runs, and up to ~19k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 212 tokens; SKILL.md has 367 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~212
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~1k
With references · SKILL.md plus every file in references/, read only if the agent opens them
~19k

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

Use when building, wiring, reviewing, or debugging MailTime and ostrio:mailer email queues for horizontally scaled Node.js, Bun, or Meteor apps. Trigger on MailTime, MongoQueue, RedisQueue, PostgresQueue, mailTimePreset, JoSk email scheduling, Redis Cluster / KeyDB Cluster / Valkey useHashTags, KeyDB active-replication, scheduled mail, retries, sendAt, concatEmails, multi-SMTP backup or balancer, client/server mail workers, dedicated mail hosts, graceful shutdown, pause/resume, custom queue adapters, duplicate sends across PM2/Kubernetes/ECS, partial-recipient delivery, claim renewal, sendingTimeout, strictPayload, raw/template escaping, transportFrom, OTP versus marketing policies, email outbox/HA sending, or migrations from Agenda, Bull, BullMQ, Bree, and sendgrid-queue. Also covers legacy mail-time 3.x pinned on Node 14/16.

MailTime

Storage-backed email queue built on JoSk. server drains and sends; client only enqueues. MongoDB, Redis, PostgreSQL, or custom queue.

Version gate — check first

If package.json pins mail-time below 4.0.0, stop here and read references/legacy-v3.md. Everything else in this skill describes 4.x/5.x and names exports, methods, and options that do not exist in 3.x (mailTimePreset, PostgresQueue, ready(), destroy({ drain }), concurrency, sendingTimeout, lockOwnerId).

Reference map

  • API, types, errors, payload policy: references/api.md
  • Adapter choice, schema, custom CAS contract: references/adapters.md
  • Topology, presets, throughput, timeouts: references/tuning.md
  • Runnable setups and shutdown: references/recipes.md
  • 3.x on Node 14/16 (last legacy line): references/legacy-v3.md

Read only reference matching task. JoSk leases, zombies, setInterval semantics: REQUIRED josk skill (npx skills add veliovgroup/josk). Redis/KeyDB/Valkey engines: references/adapters.md.

Minimal shape

js
new MailTime({
  type: 'server' | 'client',
  queue: new <Mongo|Redis|Postgres>Queue({ client|db }),
  transports, // server only
  josk: { adapter: { type, client|db }, lockOwnerId }, // server only
  prefix: 'otp',
})

Core rules:

  • Same logical queue uses same prefix on every client/server. Different policy or shard uses different prefix.
  • One JoSk lease winner per prefix/tick. More same-prefix servers add HA, not throughput. Raise MailTime concurrency or shard prefixes.
  • Postgres fits multi-DC/strongest consistency. Redis / KeyDB / Valkey fit single-region throughput: one writable primary; standalone MailTime needs watch() + multi(); Cluster needs useHashTags: true on both RedisQueue and JoSk. Mongo fits Mongo/Meteor apps and official driver.
  • Use mailTimePreset: transactional, otp, newsletter, marketing, notifications, alerts.
  • Graceful shutdown: await destroy({ drain: true }). Plain destroy() aborts completion writes.
  • SMTP delivery has unavoidable at-least-once ambiguity if acceptance succeeds but completion write is lost.

Red flags

  • Active-active Redis, KeyDB active-replication / multi-master, replica reads, Cluster/Valkey without useHashTags on both queue and JoSk, reused prefix with different policies.
  • concatEmails on OTP/password reset.
  • concatEmails on Redis/KeyDB/Valkey older than 6.2 (SET PXAT).
  • sendingTimeout below storage/SMTP conditions; v5 warns below 120s and renews active claims.
  • Expecting {{key}} to emit markup: it HTML-escapes in HTML contexts. {{{key}}} is the raw form — server-produced values only.
  • raw in a queued letter: refused since v5.
  • transport.options.from in callback. Use details.from.
  • Custom adapter skipping lease guards or calling ___send instead of ___dispatch.
  • Missing onSent/onError, ready(), or shutdown.

Runtime

Node ≥14.19.3 (5.3.0+; older 4.x/5.x declared ≥20.9; josk declares ≥14.21.3, so engine-strict installs need 14.21.3+), Bun ≥1.1, Meteor 2.14/3.2. Node 14/16 hosts need a mongodb driver their Node supports (3.x-5.x for Node 14, ≤6 for Node 16); tested with MongoQueue only. ESM + CJS. Runtime dependency: JoSk. Install nodemailer plus chosen store driver.
