nature-academic-searchFinds papers across literature sources, verifies and converts citations, builds MeSH strategies and audits independent citations of a paper.
This skill acts as a router for academic search work. It reads a manifest, loads the core tool and routing notes, works out which of six workflows your request needs and states them in one line, and then loads only the matching workflow file instead of everything.
The workflows are multi-source literature search, verification of citations pulled from a document, MeSH and PubMed search strategy, conversion of .nbib, .ris and .bib files, reference management such as BibTeX, related-article discovery and ID conversion, and a strict independent-citation audit that builds article-level citation tables and finds high-profile citers and how they cited the paper.
Source retrieval goes through an MCP server bundled with the skill, using a tiered fallback chain across sources. Converting local citation files whose records are already complete works offline and skips source setup. The skill does not translate papers or draft manuscript text.
5 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit e605b35. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Ships 1 file in scripts/ (Python and Shell, from the files we listed), which the agent can run.
From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.
From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Academic Search and Citation Router loads about 884 tokens when it runs, and up to ~14k if it reads all its reference files. Until then it costs about 65 tokens; SKILL.md has 399 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); the scripts in this folder are not scanned.
The full file from Yuan1z0825/nature-skills at commit e605b35, republished under its Apache-2.0 licence (© Yuan1z0825). 399 words, ~884 tokens.
.claude/skills/nature-academic-search/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder). This skill also uses 59 other files; get the full folder from GitHub.For local citation-file conversion with complete supplied records, load
references/workflows/wf4-citation-file-mgmt.md and its format reference directly.
Source lookup, API setup, and network preflight apply only when retrieval or verification is
needed; do not require them for a requested offline conversion.
For a new task, load the core and matching resources below. Reuse already loaded guidance on follow-ups; load more only when the task needs it.
Read manifest.yaml. It declares the workflow axis, the allowed values, and the file paths each value maps to.
Also read every file listed under always_load:
static/core/tools.md — the MCP tool inventory (core search, extended search, PubMed utilities) and the shared-module map.static/core/routing-and-ops.md — the T1→T2→T3 source routing quick guide, environment setup, error handling, and limitations.Map the user's need to one or more workflow values:
multi-source-search — find literature across sources.citation-verification — verify citations extracted from a document.mesh-strategy — build a MeSH/PubMed search strategy.citation-file-mgmt — convert/manage .nbib/.ris/.bib files.reference-mgmt — BibTeX, related-article discovery, ID conversion.strict-other-citation-impact-audit — determine strict independent other-citations, build article-level citation metric tables, identify high-profile citers (academy members, presidents/deans, talent-award holders, fellows, field leaders), and extract how they cited the target paper.A combined request (for example search then export) may need more than one. State the detected workflow(s) in one short line before proceeding.
Read the file mapped for each detected workflow (under references/workflows/). Do not read every workflow. Each workflow file links to the shared modules it needs.
Apply the loaded material in this order:
core/tools.md, core/routing-and-ops.md) — which MCP tool for which need, and the T1→T2→T3 fallback chain for source retrieval.Report specific tool failures and continue with remaining tools; broaden terms when there are no results; fall back to manual generation from MCP-fetched metadata if a script fails twice.
The files under references/ (and scripts/) are deep references, not defaults. Open them on demand per the references.on_demand table in the manifest — for example references/source-tiers.md for the full reliability classification, references/dedup-engine.md / references/citation-parser.md / references/search-strategy.md / references/ris-bibtex-format.md for the shared modules, and scripts/academic_search.py (no-MCP fallback discovery search) / scripts/format-converter.py / scripts/preflight.py for the tooling.

Finds papers across literature sources, verifies and converts citations, builds MeSH strategies and audits independent citations of a paper. This skill acts as a router for academic search work. It reads a manifest, loads the core tool and routing notes, works out which of six workflows your request needs and states them in one line, and then loads only the matching workflow file instead of everything.
Academic Search and Citation Router fits situations like: finding papers on a topic across several literature sources; checking that the references in a manuscript are real and correct; building a MeSH-based PubMed search strategy; converting between .nbib, .ris and .bib citation files.

Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode also load SKILL.md folders. With the skills CLI, run `npx skills add Yuan1z0825/nature-skills --skill nature-academic-search -a cursor` (or -a gemini-cli, github-copilot or opencode for the others). To copy it by hand, put the folder in .cursor/skills/nature-academic-search, .gemini/skills/nature-academic-search, .github/skills/nature-academic-search and .opencode/skills/nature-academic-search in your project.
Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Academic Search and Citation Router needs Python and a shell for the scripts in its folder. Our summary lists: Python environment for the bundled MCP server; Network access to the literature sources, except for offline file conversion.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. The check reads SKILL.md only: the scripts in the folder are not scanned, so read them before running anything.
Academic Search and Citation Router is published under the Apache-2.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 884 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 3.5k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full. Its references folder adds about 13k tokens, read only when the agent opens those files.
