At a glance

Runs Google Test binaries in parallel with gtest-parallel to speed up single-threaded tests, repeat flaky ones and filter specific tests.

  • Speeding up a slow Google Test binary
  • SKILL.md covers Location, Core Flags and Advanced Usage
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md
  • Repeating a flaky test many times to expose failures

What it does

The skill documents `gtest-parallel`, a script that runs Google Test binaries across several processes so that single-threaded tests, and tests that do not use a full CPU, finish sooner. In this repository the script sits at `third_party/gtest-parallel/gtest-parallel`, and it is called with the path to a test binary.

Core flags cover `--gtest_filter` with Google Test's usual syntax, including exclusions, `--timeout` and `--timeout_per_test` in seconds, `-d` or `--output_dir` for logs under `gtest-parallel-logs/`, and `--dump_json_test_results` for machine-readable results. For flakiness hunting `--repeat` reruns tests many times, `-w` or `--workers` sets the worker count (the default is the number of cores), and `--serialize_test_cases` keeps tests within one test case sequential when they share resources.

When your agent uses it

  • Speeding up a slow Google Test binary
  • Repeating a flaky test many times to expose failures
  • Running only a filtered subset of tests with a timeout

Example prompts

  • “Run ./out/tests/net_unittests with gtest-parallel and only the Foo.* tests.”
  • “Repeat the audio mixer tests 1000 times to see whether they flake.”
  • “Run my test binary with four workers and save the JSON results to results/.”

Requirements

  • A compiled Google Test binary
  • The gtest-parallel script, at `third_party/gtest-parallel/gtest-parallel` in this repository

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit 67c4578. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are bash).

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

gtest-parallel Test Runner loads about 432 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 46 tokens; SKILL.md has 163 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~46
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~432

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

gtest-parallel
description
Run Google Test binaries in parallel using the gtest-parallel script. Use when needing to speed up test execution, run flaky tests with repeat, or filter specific tests.

gtest-parallel

gtest-parallel is a script that executes Google Test binaries in parallel, providing speedup for single-threaded tests and tests that do not run at 100% CPU.

Location

The script is located at third_party/gtest-parallel/gtest-parallel.

Core Flags

Filtering Tests

Use --gtest_filter to run a select set of tests. It supports the same syntax as Google Test (including exclusion with -).

bash
third_party/gtest-parallel/gtest-parallel path/to/binary --gtest_filter=Foo.*:Bar.*
Timeouts
  • --timeout=TIMEOUT: Interrupt all remaining processes after the given time (in seconds).
  • --timeout_per_test=TIMEOUT_PER_TEST: Interrupt single processes after the given time (in seconds).
Output and Logging
  • -d OUTPUT_DIR, --output_dir=OUTPUT_DIR: Output directory for test logs. Logs will be available under gtest-parallel-logs/ inside the specified directory.
  • --dump_json_test_results=DUMP_JSON_TEST_RESULTS: Saves the results of the tests as a JSON machine-readable file.

Advanced Usage

Repeating Tests (Flakiness Testing)

Use --repeat=N to run tests multiple times.

bash
third_party/gtest-parallel/gtest-parallel path/to/binary --repeat=1000
Workers

Use -w WORKERS or --workers=WORKERS to specify the number of parallel workers (defaults to the number of cores).

Serializing Test Cases

Use --serialize_test_cases to run tests within the same test case sequentially (useful if they share resources).
