agent-add-mcpAdds an MCP server to Warp's global or project-level config file, keeping existing servers and choosing between command-based and URL-based setups.
The agent first asks whether the server should apply to every project, in `~/.warp/.mcp.json`, or only to one repository, in a `.warp/.mcp.json` file at the repository root. If you have not given connection details, it searches the web for the named server's configuration, and it asks whether the server should run as a local stdio command or be reached by URL over HTTP or SSE streaming.
It then creates the config file with an empty `mcpServers` wrapper if needed, or reads the existing file to see which wrapper key is already used, among `mcpServers`, `mcp_servers`, `servers`, `mcp.servers` or a flat map, and preserves it. Existing server entries are never removed. Stdio servers start from the repo root for project configs and the home directory for global ones, and a `working_directory` setting overrides that when the command uses relative paths.
4 steps, taken from the step headings in SKILL.md.
Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit f571865. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.
Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.
From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.
No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md (its code samples are json).
From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.
No URLs in SKILL.md.
From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.
Names these keys or tokens, usually read from environment variables:
API_KEYFrom names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.
Add MCP Server to Warp loads about 812 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 23 tokens; SKILL.md has 352 words of instructions outside code blocks.
Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.
The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.
Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.
The full file from warpdotdev/warp at commit f571865, republished under its AGPL-3.0 licence (© warpdotdev). 352 words, ~812 tokens.
.claude/skills/agent-add-mcp/SKILL.md (or your agent's skills folder).Warp supports MCP servers via native config files. Follow these steps when helping a user add an MCP server.
If the user hasn't specified, ask whether they want to configure the server globally (for all projects) or project-scoped (for a specific repository only).
Config file paths:
~/.warp/.mcp.json{repo_root}/.warp/.mcp.jsonIf the user hasn't provided the server's connection details, use WebSearch to find the correct configuration for the named server.
If it's unclear whether the server should be run as a local CLI process (stdio transport) or connected to via URL (HTTP/SSE streaming transport), ask the user which they prefer.
Check whether the target config file exists.
If it does not exist, create it with mkdir -p for the directory and initialize it with an empty mcpServers wrapper key:
{
"mcpServers": {}
}If it exists, read it to determine which top-level wrapper key is already in use. Recognized wrapper keys (in order of preference):
mcpServers (preferred)mcp_serversserversmcp.servers (nested under a mcp key)Preserve the existing wrapper key when writing. If the existing key is unrecognized or incompatible, switch to mcpServers.
Never remove existing server entries — only add or update the new server.

"server-name": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@scope/package-name"],
"env": {

}By default, Warp spawns stdio servers from the directory the config was discovered in:
{repo_root}/.warp/.mcp.json) run from the repo root.~/.warp/.mcp.json, ~/.claude.json, etc.) run from the home directory.If the server's command or args are relative paths (e.g. ./tooling/mcp/server.js) or the server expects a specific cwd, set working_directory to override the default:
{
"mcpServers": {
"server-name": {
"command": "node",
"args": ["./tooling/mcp/server.js"],
"working_directory": "/absolute/path/to/repo"

}For environment variables containing secrets, use ${VAR_NAME} syntax — Warp will substitute the value from the user's environment at runtime.

Going by SKILL.md and its folder, Add MCP Server to Warp needs credentials named API_KEY. Our summary lists: Warp with native MCP config file support.
SKILL.md contains no URLs. Any network use would come from the scripts or tools the agent runs. This is read from the text; nothing was executed.
Our automated static check of SKILL.md found no risky patterns, such as piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files or hidden Unicode. It is not a guarantee. Review the folder before installing.
Add MCP Server to Warp is published under the AGPL-3.0 licence (the repository's licence). It allows redistribution, so the full SKILL.md is shown on this page.
About 812 tokens (SKILL.md is roughly 3.2k characters). Agents keep only the skill's name and description in context until a task matches; then they load SKILL.md in full.
