At a glance

Save what was learned to Hindsight long-term memory. An agent skill from vectorize-io/hindsight.

  • Works in 3 steps: Decide where it belongs → Write a short, self-contained note that… → Call retain with that note as content,…
  • A task finishes
  • SKILL.md covers Steps and Rules
  • Instructions only: no scripts, shell commands, URLs or credentials in SKILL.md

What it does

Memory Retain is an agent skill from vectorize-io/hindsight. Save what was learned to Hindsight long-term memory. Use when a task finishes, when the user states a fact, decision or preference, and when you discover something a later run or another Bot would need.

Its SKILL.md is about 290 tokens, which your agent loads only when the skill is triggered. It is a single SKILL.md file with no bundled scripts.

It sits in Agent Workflows, covering Agent memory. The repository describes itself as: Hindsight: Agent Memory That Learns. The licence is MIT.

When your agent uses it

  • A task finishes
  • The user states a fact
  • When you discover something a later run
  • Another Bot would need

Example prompts

  • “/memory-retain”

Workflow steps

3 steps, taken from the first numbered list in SKILL.md.

  1. Decide where it belongs
  2. Write a short, self-contained note that makes sense with no other context: what happened or was decided, who decided it, when, and why…
  3. Call retain with that note as content, and tags of source:grok-bot and bot:.

What it can do on your machine

Read from SKILL.md and the folder at commit fb11ddf. It shows what the files ask for, not the result of running them.

  • Tool permissions

Pre-approves nothing: there is no allowed-tools line, so your agent's usual permission prompts apply.

From allowed-tools in the SKILL.md frontmatter.

  • Runs code

No scripts in the folder and no shell commands in SKILL.md.

From the folder's file list and the shell code blocks in SKILL.md.

  • Network

    No URLs in SKILL.md.

From URLs in SKILL.md, links to its own repository left out.

  • Credentials

Names no API keys, tokens, secrets or passwords.

From names ending in _API_KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, _KEY or _PASSWORD in SKILL.md.

Context cost

Memory Retain loads about 294 tokens when it runs. Until then it costs about 54 tokens; SKILL.md has 153 words of instructions outside code blocks.

Always · name and description, kept in context so the agent knows when to use it
~54
When it runs · the whole SKILL.md, loaded when a task matches
~294

Estimates: characters ÷ 4, the usual rule of thumb; real counts depend on the model's tokenizer. Scripts and assets cost tokens only if the agent reads them.

Safety

Auto-check passed

The automated check found no risky patterns in SKILL.md.

Automated static check — not a guarantee. Review scripts before installing. It scans the text of SKILL.md for risky patterns (piping downloads into a shell, reading credential files, hidden Unicode, destructive commands); files beside SKILL.md are not scanned.

description
Save what was learned to Hindsight long-term memory. Use when a task finishes, when the user states a fact, decision or preference, and when you discover something a later run or another Bot would need.

Save what was learned

Memory is only useful if the next run can find it. Save the outcome and the reason, not a transcript.

Steps

  1. Decide where it belongs:
    • Only useful to this Bot's own work: this Bot's bank, grok-bot::<bot-name>.
    • Useful to any Bot, or a fact about the user: grok-bot::shared.
  2. Write a short, self-contained note that makes sense with no other context: what happened or was decided, who decided it, when, and why. "On 3 Oct the user chose Vendor B over Vendor A because A has no EU data residency" beats "user picked B".
  3. Call retain with that note as content, and tags of source:grok-bot and bot:<bot-name>.

Rules

  • One note per distinct fact or decision. Do not paste whole conversations or tool output.
  • Never store passwords, one-time codes, API keys, card or account numbers, or health measurements.
  • Never write to banks that belong to the user's other tools.
